Dimensional Metrology Engineering Technologist/CMM Expert (Engineering Technologist 3)

What You Will Do

The Prototype Fabrication Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides technical experience and proficiency in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's nuclear stockpile stewardship efforts. The selected candidate will be joining a dedicated staff of engineers, machinists, and quality control professionals to ensure manufactured components meet drawing standards and requirements. We are seeking a skilled Dimensional Metrology Engineering Technologist to join the Prototype Fabrication Applied Metrology (PF-AM) group. In this role, you will collaborate with engineers, machinists, inspectors, and quality professionals to ensure high standards in manufacturing and precision measurements.

Key responsibilities include participating in Design for Manufacturability Reviews, ensuring dimensional inspection requirements are achievable, and selecting appropriate Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) based on the required Total Uncertainty Ratio (TUR) to meet design specifications. You will perform precise dimensional inspections and verify compliance with design specifications for components and assemblies.

Additionally, you will write optimized, user-friendly Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programs, provide technical support to internal and external customers, and mentor less experienced team members. By fostering a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment, you will help strengthen the team's capabilities in dimensional inspection, CMM programming, and M&TE usage.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise
  • Expert knowledge in programming, operating and calibrating CMMs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Expert knowledge utilizing QUINDOS, PC-DMIS, PolyWorks or Calypso CMM Software.
  • Expert knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application to ensure accurate dimensional measurements.
  • Expert knowledge using M&TE in a high-precision dimensional inspection laboratories, including surface roughness testers, shadow graphs, density determination stations, height gauges, calipers, micrometers, and other precision gauges.
  • Advanced understanding of M&TE traceable to NIST, including in-depth knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. ISO, ASME).

Communication and Teamwork
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills to present data and reports to peers, senior colleagues, management, and customers clearly and professionally.
  • Advanced experience training and mentoring inspectors in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficient in measurement uncertainty analysis, with the ability to calculate and evaluate the Test Uncertainty Ratio (TUR) and select the appropriate measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) needed for measurements of part features.
  • Advanced experience utilizing CAD software, including SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor or Fusion 360.
  • Hands-on experience in maintaining, error mapping, calibrating, and repairing CMMs to achieve sub-micron measurement uncertainties.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
