Electrical Engineer Post-Bachelor

What You Will Do

As a part of the Safeguards and Technology Group (NEN-1) within the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division, you will play a crucial role in supporting nuclear engineering projects aimed at promoting safety and nonproliferation. Your daily responsibilities will involve hands-on technical work with electronic components, requiring precision and attention to detail. Specifically, you will:

  • Assemble and build various types of cables to ensure reliable connectivity for complex systems.
  • Solder components on printed circuit boards (PCBs) and carry out PCB layout work, maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and quality.
  • Troubleshoot both analog and digital devices to identify and resolve technical issues efficiently.
  • Program microcontrollers for customized applications within our projects.
  • Read, interpret, and implement engineering instructions, schematics, layouts, and other specifications, ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory standards.
  • Assists in testing experiments and diagnostic equipment.
  • Support prototype development; provides input for custom parts, assemblies, and testing.
  • Perform appropriate modifications to circuits and electronic devices when instructed to do so.
  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with a skilled team of engineers and technicians to drive the success of our nonproliferation and safeguard initiatives.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Basic capability to use electronic design automation (EDA) software tools such as Altium or KiCAD for PCB design.
  • Coursework and/or practical experience in the design and analysis of analog circuits, such as amplifiers, filters, and biasing networks.
  • Understanding of small-signal analog amplification concepts, including gain, bandwidth, noise sources, and basic noise mitigation techniques.
  • Familiarity with concepts related to electrical interference and signal integrity, including grounding, shielding, and layout considerations.
  • Hands-on experience using standard electronic laboratory equipment, such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, and signal generators.
  • Basic understanding of sensor or detector output signal characteristics, such as signal amplitude, dynamic range, bandwidth, and noise behavior.
  • Foundational knowledge and introductory experience in digital electronics and embedded systems used to process signals from sensors and support the development of electronic modules. This includes:
  • Understanding of digital electronics concepts, including logic devices, timing, and basic digital circuit operation, with some experience debugging digital systems.
  • Familiarity with common hardware interfaces and peripheral devices, such as:
  • Digital-to-analog converters (DACs)
  • Memory devices
  • Sensors and digital peripherals
  • Analog-to-digital converter (ADCs)
  • Exposure to communication and interconnect concepts between processors, FPGAs, and peripheral devices (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART), through coursework, projects, or internships.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with technical writing or documentation.
  • Contribute to a healthy and inclusive work environment. This includes ability to resolve conflict in a positive way, give and receive feedback effectively, and always show kindness and respect towards others.

Education/Experience

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution completed within the past 3 years with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research on problems affecting electronic or mechanical systems and/or equipment.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Schedule: A 5-40 or 9-80 schedule during normal working hours.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
