The Smart Factory & Digital Transformation Group is seeking a solutions architect to support standardization of process and data usage in support of LANL's production mission. This position will be focused on the systems that directly support engineering work and the interfaces governing those systems connections with other business solutions. The solutions architect will move between solutions as each gets stood up and help to develop the overall picture of IT and business process needed to support our mission. Because of this, the positions work scope may be understood as a blend of solution and enterprise architecture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect and maintain the engineering domain digital thread framework, including cross-domain model policies, UAF-based architecture model, information object catalogue, and implementation requirements. Expected major domain systems are requirements management, product lifecycle management, simulation data management, long term records management, MBSE connectors, and their interfaces with other business systems.
  • Drive tool selection and validation by partnering with production and infrastructure teams to ensure solutions enhance production execution.
  • Advance standards adoption by evaluating and implementing relevant industry standards (OSLC, QIF) that deliver value to production operations
  • Champion solution adoption by coordinating training and line organization support in using new solutions.
  • Drive digital manufacturing transformation by evaluating and implementing emerging technologies (IoT, AI, data analytics, smart systems) to enhance the engineering digital thread, enable data-driven decision-making, and shift engineering focus from manual processes to strategic technical troubleshooting.
  • Continuously monitor solution performance and identify opportunities for improvement to better meet the needs of our engineering organizations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with LANL Design Agency and Nuclear Security Enterprise stakeholders to ensure site-wide alignment and advocate for Nuclear Production needs.


Salary Range:

Solutions Architect 3: $117,200 to $195,400

Solutions Architect 4: $141,500 to $238,300

What You Need

  • Education/Experience Solutions Architect 3: Position requires a Bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Education/Experience Solutions Architect 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.


Solutions Architect 3 Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of change and configuration management.
  • Experience planning and executing projects of moderate to high complexity.
  • Strong documentation skills; demonstrated ability to document technical results in a formal method/format.
  • Familiarity with the product realization process within the nuclear security enterprise.
  • Intermediate or above skill with Models Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML, DoDAF, or UAF.
  • Understanding of databases, data structures, data modelling, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Shop floor manufacturing experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Information Technology teams, shop floor personnel, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Experience in aspects of project management of technical work, including defining work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones.


Solutions Architect 4 Job Requirements: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualifications at the higher level:

  • Experience coordinating project work for a team of up to 6 people.
  • Demonstrated leadership in complex, multi-disciplinary efforts.
  • Experience mentoring early career engineers and scientists.
  • Expert level skill with Models Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML, DoDAF, or UAF. At the solutions architect 4 level a UAF certification is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with formal requirements management and derivation.


Desired Qualifications:

  • CM2-CORE or higher certification.
  • Certified SCRUM Product Owner (CSPO) Certification.
  • Engineering or Computer Science degrees from an ABET accredited institution are preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to analyze complex procedural challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0 practices and IoT implementation and standards (i.e. OPC-UA, MTConnect), smart systems integration, and understanding of how AI/analytics can enhance the manufacturing mission.
  • Experience with private industry production and/or working within a Hazard Category 1, 2, or 3 nuclear facility a plus.


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may/will require 24/7 coverage, which could/will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
