What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional Engineering Tech to join our team within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division, TA55 Designer/Drafter group. The PFE Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.

The incumbent will be working as part of a design team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at LANL. The successful candidate will be expected to lead, train and mentor junior designers. Regular functions include but are not limited to; Creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs, visits to facilities to evaluate, identify, and document existing deficiencies; producing calculations and design recommendations; develop initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval.

Engineering Technologist 1 ($83,900- $136,600)
Applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems within discipline in support of the nuclear facility and LANL's missions. Supports engineers and projects in the performance of moderately complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. Responsible for assigned activities within assigned area of responsibility in support of nuclear facilities, design, operation, maintenance, project and/or research-based nuclear facility engineering. May directly support operations technicians and maintenance staff. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work include analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aid design, controls software, word processing and other analytical and design software. Prepares, modifies, and reviews documents including technical manuals, drawings, and calculations. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge/experience of engineering drafting, design and detailing.
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction practices.
  • Extensive experience with Autodesk AutoCAD (2014 or higher preferred) and Revit.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and customers.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure drawing coordination and quality.
  • Excellent ability to develop CAD Drawings and design models.
  • Knowledge with PDM and configuration management
  • Ability to produce work in accordance with budget and schedule constraints.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Advanced capability to participate in process improvement activities.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of CAD Standards (National CAD Standards -NCS).
  • Knowledge/understanding of industry codes and standards (IBC, UMC, UPC, ASME B31, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design and high-level 3-D parametric CAD systems. Proficient knowledge of second CAD system.
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Performs facility walk downs as required

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
