What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is the nation's premier plutonium center of excellence. At LANL, we lead in ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile while advancing research across a spectrum of scientific disciplines, including national security, space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology. Our advanced nuclear facility emphasizes precision machining and adherence to standards in a high-tech manufacturing environment.

The Pit Technologies (PT) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), is instrumental in delivering top-quality plutonium pit-related products and services. This division focuses on maintaining and enhancing the performance of nuclear components while following rigorous compliance and safety protocols. As a member of the PT-8 Machining Group within the PT Division, you will report directly to the Manufacturing Manager 1 (MM1).

Engineering Technologist 1 ($87,800 - $143,000)

The successful candidate will perform the job activities listed below, but are not limited to:

This candidate will be responsible for extracting technical data from engineering drawings and specifications to ensure procured materials meet design requirements as they pertain to national codes and standards as well as LANL quality requirements. This individual will manage a consolidated bill of materials (CBOM), and interface with procurement and warehousing teams as materials are made available to support construction project objectives. They will participate in IPT meetings and serve as a primary PT-8 point of contact for project personnel.
  • Uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Frequently contributes to the development of new methods and approaches.
  • Applies expert knowledge of the principles of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve routine technical problems.
  • Work with engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures; coordinate corrective actions.
  • Assists in on-the-job training of personnel, as assigned.
  • Understand material and material properties.
  • Evaluate problems post inspection; tooling and fixturing.
  • Understand CNC machine capabilities.
  • Aiding & mentoring early career engineers and machinists for design and manufacturability as well as operations of machine tools in a Category 2 Nuclear Facility.
  • Understand and able to utilize a variety of CNC machines such as Haas, Mazak, Moore, Precitech, and DMU.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)

In addition to those outlined above, the Engineering Technologist 2 responsibilities will include:

In addition to the duties outlined above for the Engineering Technologist 1 level, Engineering Technologist 2 should be able to work independently, effectively represent the PT-8 Group in IPT and other meetings and provide guidance to customers and junior personnel.
  • Prepares, reviews and documents technical information.
  • Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.
  • Provide project support. Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Familiarity with reviewing technical specifications and engineering design drawings to extract technical information.
  • Basic understanding of national codes and standards used to establish material characteristics.
  • Basic knowledge of QA standards and applicability.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office - Access, Excel & Word, along with experience using other relevant software programs.
  • Ability to deliver clear and concise written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting to deliver outstanding customer service.
  • Basic understanding of the supply chain management process and strategies.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Experience with engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to perform tasks that will provide succinct communication and guidance.
  • Understanding and experience using QA standards, and familiarity with LANL Management Levels.
  • Familiarity with developing and submitting pre-procurement and submittal evidence packages.
  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
  • Previous materials management experience.
  • Ability to work and function with a high degree of accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with construction disciplines to include electrical, mechanical, fire protection
  • Familiarity with engineering technical standards to include ASTM and/or ASME standards.

Education/Experience for Engineering Technologist 1:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Engineering Technologist 2:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:
  • DOE Q Clearance
  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex specific codes, standards

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
