Engineering Technologist 1/2

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce War Reserve (WR) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission.

The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in a matrixed structure. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe, and reliable WR detonator products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Weapon System Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on uniquely challenging, high-consequence national security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, a respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety, and security.

The Detonator Production Product Engineering group (DP-1) supports high explosive detonator component manufacturing and Container Kit Assembly (CKA) design operations in the Detonator Production (DP) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). The Product Engineering group is considered the primary technical interface with the three design agencies and the NNSA stakeholders. Though the Product Engineers do not manage the programmatic schedule and financial requirements of a component, they must be familiar with and able to effectively communicate information in support of those activities.

As an Engineering Technologist working in the Product Engineering group (DP-1), you will initiate and conduct engineering assignments that ensure consistent and high quality design and manufacturing of Container Kit Assemblies (CKAs) that are manufactured in support of packaging and shipping detonators between the plants and sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). There will be significant collaboration with the drafting team in DP-2, the logistics team within DP-4, and the project leads in DP-5. This role also participates in a supporting function to several Product Realization Teams (PRT). There is significant interface with several other Design and Production Agencies (DA and PA) including those at LANL as well as those at Lawarence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, Pantex Plant, and Kansas City National Security Campus. This role will also interface with NNSA's Office of Secure Transportation as well as the various modernization and sustainment offices.

This position has the unique role of both Design Agency and Production Agency. In the DA role you will be designing the CKAs to meet very strict safety and regulatory requirements for packaging and shipping high explosives and high explosive detonators. In the PA role you will interface directly with DP-4 logistics team to help create documentation to support the manufacturing of the CKAs. This will be inclusive of using DP's established business operations practices.

This position will report to the Product Engineering Group Leader (DP-1) and day to day supervision will come from the DP-1 First Line Manager (FLM).

  • Author proper Engineering Authorizations to communicate formal engineering intent.
  • Identify cause of non-conformance and potential corrective actions for Non-Conforming Report (NCRs) that are related to their product. Provide disposition for nonconforming product.
  • Work with Process Engineers and other Product Engineers in support of other DP component manufacturing to design and document manufacturing fixtures.
  • An ability to work independently without heavy supervision on technical problems, but balancing with knowing when and how to seek technical advice from other subject matter experts.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($94,500-$154,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level.
  • Serve as a core support member of the Product Realization Team (PRT), acting as the PRIMARY CKA technical point of contact.
  • Facilitate test activities that drive the qualification of CKAs for shipping. This will include designing the test fixtures, executing the tests, analyzing the data, and issuing test reports.
  • Lead the PA through programmatic technical reviews (e.g. Product Definition and Design Reviews, Production Readiness Reviews)
  • Collaborate with process engineers by engaging in DP's component manufacturing process development, providing feedback on needed process improvements, and assisting with process improvement implementation.
  • Provide a technical backstop to the drafters in DP-2 as an expert on design practices inclusive of understanding tolerance application using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
