This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
This position is ideal for candidates with backgrounds in software engineering, information systems, or computer science who are interested in applying their skills to complex, real world engineering systems. You will work closely with engineers, operations, and maintenance teams to manage system data, support configuration control, and improve how engineering information is captured, tracked, and used across the facility lifecycle.
The Plutonium Facility Engineering group supports the Laboratory's mission by maintaining the technical integrity of systems and facilities through configuration management, data management, and engineering process execution. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, software, and information systems, ensuring that facility data, system configurations, and technical baselines remain accurate, controlled, and aligned with safety and operational requirements.
Nuclear Facility employees do not just follow requirements, they define them. Working across disciplines, they integrate seamlessly with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, and project management teams to ensure that every requirement supports mission execution without compromise.
Engineering Technologist 2 $96,600-$158,000
- Supports configuration management and technical baseline activities for facility systems, ensuring engineering data and documentation remain accurate, traceable, and compliant.
- Assists with development, review, and update of technical procedures, system documentation, and configuration records.
- Supports definition and control of system and facility modifications, including tracking changes and maintaining alignment with approved baselines.
- Contributes to data collection, monitoring, and trending of system performance, helping identify issues and support engineering decision making.
- Assists with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and development of corrective maintenance actions for complex or critical systems.
- Participates in facility walkdowns and supports implementation of engineering programs, including Conduct of Engineering.
- Works under direction while building technical depth in system engineering processes, data management, and engineering tools.
Engineering Technologist 3 - $104,100 - $172,200
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
- Applies configuration management and system engineering principles with greater independence to maintain and improve technical baselines for facility systems.
- Leads or supports definition, control, and implementation of system modifications, ensuring integration across engineering disciplines and compliance with requirements.
- Analyzes system data, trends performance, and identifies issues requiring corrective actions or process improvements.
- Provides project support, including review of project controls, cost estimates, change documentation, and technical impacts to system baselines.
- Leads small technical efforts or subgroups, coordinating work, guiding less experienced staff, and ensuring completion of assigned tasks.
- Identifies opportunities to improve data management, workflows, and engineering processes, including application of software or automation tools to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Operates with increased independence and technical judgment, contributing to system reliability and long term facility performance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience supporting engineering systems, configuration management, or technical data management in industrial, software, or facility environments.
- Knowledge of engineering processes such as design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance.
- Experience with data management, software tools, or scripting used to track, analyze, or manage technical information.
- Ability to define and support system or facility modifications within a controlled engineering environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information across teams.
- Experience with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, or system performance evaluation.
Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage configuration management or technical baseline activities for complex systems.
- Experience analyzing system data, identifying trends, and implementing improvements or corrective actions.
- Experience leading small projects, tasks, or technical efforts.
- Strong understanding of engineering work planning and control methods.
- Ability to apply software, automation, or data driven approaches to improve engineering processes and workflows.
- Proven ability to coordinate across engineering disciplines and stakeholders.
Education/Experience at lower level: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a Technical field and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Requires 1-2 years specifically as a BIM modeler, coordinator, or specialist.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Background in software engineering, computer science, information systems, or related technical field.
- Experience working in nuclear, industrial, or highly regulated environments.
- Familiarity with DOE and LANL standards related to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
- Experience with configuration management systems, databases, or digital engineering tools.
- Experience developing scripts, tools, or automated workflows to manage engineering data.
- Active DOE Q clearance.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule. This role combines office based engineering work with field activities, including facility walkdowns and site visits to evaluate systems and support safe, compliant operations.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
