The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within Engineering Services Institutional Project Delivery (ES-IPD) which is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program and commercial or conventional designs for non-nuclear and low-hazard work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position primarily supports non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory but may be called on to support nuclear or accelerator facilities.
As an Electrical design engineer with Engineering Services, you will function as part of a design agency serving one of three Facilities Operations Directorates (FODs), Institutional Facilities (IF). You will work concurrently on multiple design teams shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. You will function as the electrical team leader, responsible for distributing and monitoring electrical workload within ES-IPD. You will participate with the rest of the engineers and architects within ES-IPD and the other engineering groups to provide engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases: scoping; design; construction; commissioning; operation.
The level 3 role includes the following job opportunities:
- Lead the Electrical Engineering team in ES-IPD (anticipated to be 3 to 6 people)
- Provide senior engineering expertise and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Assess, maintain, and upgrade electrical systems at LANL to support national security.
- Represent Engineering Services Division as a leader in effective and efficient project execution.
- Be recognized as a subject-matter-expert (SME), helping to ensure third-party designs are code-compliant and meet our customers' needs.
- Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems.
- Expertly apply engineering judgement to engineering challenges.
- Utilize your experience to prepare accurate cost estimates for our customers.
- Work to scope both internally and externally executed design projects.
- Produce high-level design deliverables including drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations.
- Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards.
- Review construction submittals, provide RFI responses and generate design revisions.
- Support organizational initiatives for improvements in design and business practices.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Expert ability to support timely and collaborative construction execution. This includes timely review of submittals, requests for information (RFIs), design changes, non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents.
- Ability to manage, prioritize, and communicate workload and tasks.
- Demonstrated expert knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, etc.).
- Working experience in power system engineering, including fault current analysis, voltage drop calculations, protection coordination studies, incident energy studies and equipment sizing.
- Demonstrated expert design experience in commercial and/or government sectors.
- Demonstrated expert experience in the development of engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, test and inspection plans (TIPs), and statements of special inspection (SSIs).
- Demonstrated expert experience in the scoping of complex projects to produce an estimate of engineering costs for both design and construction activities.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-discipline team of engineers and designers.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor early career engineers.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
- Current Professional Engineering (PE) License in Electrical Engineering.
- Design experience in industrial, accelerator, or nuclear facility operations.
- Master's degree in engineering.
- Professional experience with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
- Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes.
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering
- Principles and procedures.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
