What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Utilities and Infrastructure Project Delivery Group (ES-UPD) is seeking a Deputy Group Leader (Engineering Manager 3) to lead ES-UPD Design Services - a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, drafters, design managers, and technical professionals delivering critical infrastructure projects in support of the Utilities and Infrastructure Division Office (UI-DO).

Design Services provides in-house engineering expertise supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL's) horizontal infrastructure, transportation, site utilities, and facilities tied to steam, electrical, and water treatment systems. This organization plays a vital role in advancing LANL's national security mission through safe, compliant, and high-quality engineering delivery.

We are seeking a technically strong, mission-driven leader who can build and inspire high-performing teams while successfully managing a growing and complex infrastructure portfolio.

As Deputy Group Leader, you will:
  • Lead and manage a diverse, multi-disciplinary engineering organization, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet all applicable federal, state, and local codes and standards, as well as LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) requirements.
  • Oversee scope, schedule, budget, quality, and resource planning for assigned projects and personnel.
  • Develop and maintain strong customer partnerships, identify emerging work, and support business development and proposal efforts.
  • Provide strategic staffing, workforce planning, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, policies, and work practices.
  • Exercise sound engineering judgment and apply graded approach principles in decision-making.
  • Serve as a liaison between engineers, stakeholders, management, and field personnel to resolve technical and programmatic challenges.
  • Partner with the Group Leader to establish and achieve short- and long-term organizational goals.
This role blends technical leadership, engineering management, and strategic vision. The selected candidate will shape the future of infrastructure design delivery at LANL while developing the next generation of engineering leaders.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience leading or managing engineering teams in design, construction, infrastructure, or related technical environments.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering design processes, technical reviews, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Experience managing staffing, budgets, schedules, resource loading, and performance metrics.
  • Proven ability to build high-performing integrated project teams (IPTs) and maintain effective customer relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical solutions to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability across technical, organizational, and personnel challenges.
  • Experience implementing process improvements and driving operational efficiencies.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment where employees feel empowered to raise concerns and contribute ideas.
  • Experience with personnel management, including hiring, onboarding, performance development, and recognition.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Advanced engineering or technical degree.
  • Formal management and/or technical leadership training.
  • Experience with DOE/NNSA engineering standards and LANL Conduct of Engineering requirements.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards commonly used at DOE/DOD facilities (e.g., FHWA, AASHTO, NMDOT, ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, NEC, etc.).
  • Experience interpreting and applying DOE/NNSA regulatory and design requirements.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
