Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Fire Alarm Design Engineering Technologist. As a vital member of the Institutional Project Delivery (IPD) team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Engineering Technologist Level 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

This is a senior facilities engineering design position. We are seeking a skilled professional fire alarm designer with leadership and collaboration skills to serve multi-discipline facilities design teams, and advance ES Division's initiatives. The Laboratory is experiencing a major cultural shift in project delivery. This shift emphasizes stewardship through efficiency and a sense of urgency that best aligns with profit-driven A/E/C industry practices. The successful candidate will possess both technical and leadership skills suited to a growing business enterprise. Typical work activities are creating construction contract documents for digital addressable fire alarm systems, third-party design reviews and design verification for other designers. This person will represent design interests during all phases of project delivery -planning, scoping, design, construction and commissioning.

The position includes the following job duties:
  • Render subject matter expert-level engineering judgements
  • Assess existing conditions and work closely with stakeholders to develop scopes of work
  • Adhere to consensus prevailing codes and standards, and applicable DOE requirements
  • Produce coordinated construction Contract Documents, and perform quality assurance oversight for others
  • Provide third-party reviews of sub-consultant designs
  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning
  • Mentor junior design personnel


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Certifications and Software Expertise
  • Current advanced-level NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems
  • Expert ability with AutoCAD software
Design and Engineering Experience
  • Demonstrated expert design experience in fire alarm systems for commercial and/or industrial facilities
  • Demonstrated expert application of consensus codes and standards to facilities designs
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and defend engineering judgement
Operational Effectiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to function with a sense of urgency and focus on efficiency
  • Demonstrated advanced-level experience working with AHJ requirements
Documentation and Communication Skills
  • Demonstrated expert ability in preparing and interpreting construction documents
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally
Mentorship and Leadership

  • Demonstrated ability in coaching and mentoring junior personnel


Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3: The position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or a related degree from an ABET accredited program and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with A/E/C industry practices
  • CSI Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) certification
  • NFPA CFPS Certification
  • Demonstrated expert experience in a senior design role
  • Familiarity with AlarmCAD software


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position:
Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
