Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) plays a crucial role in maintaining the nation's nuclear deterrent and advancing scientific research. At the heart of LANL's mission is the Pit Technologies (PT) Division, a key component of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). This division is at the forefront of manufacturing operations at Technical Area 55 (TA-55), a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to plutonium research and pit production.
The PT Division is currently in growth mode in terms of scope, budget, and personnel, and is currently looking to fill out the management chain in support of the Division's vision. The Pit Technologies Division Office has several openings for First Line Managers, Manufacturing Manager 3. These positions lead engineering or operations teams in various groups, including PT-2 (Plutonium Machining), PT-3 (Plutonium Assembly and Welding), PT-4 (Plutonium Foundry), PT-5 (Plutonium Product Engineering), PT-6 (Production Technical Support), PT-7 (Plutonium NDE & Inspection), and PT-8 (Plutonium Tooling). These positions will have the title of First Line Manager and will assist in the oversight of Pit Technologies employees and activities within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production. The selected candidate will assist in establishing a vision and path for the future for their respective group by ensuring the timely and successful delivery of plutonium pit-related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability.
The selected candidate will use their skills and expertise to organize and guide research and technical efforts, while interacting with peers and other leaders for strategic purposes. You will facilitate hiring, mentoring staff, and building strong technical teams to fulfill mission objectives. You will contribute to advanced manufacturing and development concepts for pit technology modernization and the PT Division Office strategy. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives.
- Establishing scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource and performance management and ensuring worker qualification and authorization.
- Delivers quality products and/or services; enforces adherence to quality standards; achieves balance between the need to meet both productivity goals and quality standards.
- Ensures administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to before releasing work.
- Working with facility operations staff to execute work safely, securely, with quality, and in compliance with nuclear facility requirements.
- Ensures direct daily oversight of work, workers and the work environment. Recognition as the safety responsible line manager over people, equipment, and processes.
- Ongoing communications with line management reporting on work status, deliverables and commitments.
- Directing and overseeing work performed by employees including "on the floor" supervision.
- Effective time management skills and the ability to deal effectively with changing priorities and conflicting demands.
- Effective teamwork in accomplishing objectives, including mentoring and motivating peers.
- Providing financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Leadership: Demonstrated record of successful technical leadership and proven ability in supervising, resolving conflicts, administering discipline, mentoring, team building, managing staff requirements, motivating employees, and developing personnel such as students and/or early career scientists and engineers.
Knowledge and Expertise: Demonstrated experience in developing work scope, schedules, budgets, and coordinating work activities. Experience planning for and managing tactical execution of work; tracking and reporting progress. Experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and executing work in compliance with facility requirements, conduct of operations, conduct of engineering and conduct of maintenance standards.
Accountability: Experience working with confidential or proprietary information, classified documents or sensitive information.
Communication: Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications; effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Master's degree is strongly preferred.
DOE 426.2A: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science or technology, and 4 years of nuclear experience. Job-related education or experience may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may be used to substitute up to 50 percent of the experience requirement per section I 4.e of the Contractor Requirements Document (CRD).
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in project and program management, including planning, organizing, and resource management
- Experience with defining work unit objectives and tasks in alignment with organizational objectives, and tracking and reporting on progress
- Experience with work package development and execution, identification of resource requirements and development of resource loaded schedules and financial stewardship
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, generators and professional staff
- Experience executing work in compliance with facility requirements
- Knowledgeable of Integrated Work Management (IWM) and integrated safety and security management (ISSM) procedures
- Experience with nuclear high hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution
- DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certification highly desirable
Work Schedule: Pit Technologies is staffing for production work 7 days per week. This position may require 7-day coverage and therefore may require working a shift schedule that includes weekends. Individuals typically work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

PT-2 Plutonium Machining - is responsible for machining plutonium parts. Work includes weapons component manufacturing, pit production, and surveillance.
PT-3 Plutonium Assembly and Welding - is responsible for the welding and assembly of pits and their components. Operations include the assembly and welding of weapons-related and non-weapons-related assemblies, which contain plutonium-239 metal. In addition to these efforts, PT-3 is responsible for assembly of sub-critical experiments, science campaign work, and Department of Homeland Security and global security efforts.
PT-4 Plutonium Foundry - is responsible for alloying, casting, and heat-treating plutonium parts. Work includes weapons component manufacturing, pit production, and surveillance.
PT-5 Plutonium Product Engineering - is responsible for the configuration management of plutonium products, primarily pit manufacturing, pit surveillance and subcritical experiments during the entire product lifecycle from development through production.
PT-6 Production Technical Support - is responsible for providing technical and project management expertise to aid in the transition from manufacturing development pits to pit production.
PT-7 Plutonium NDE &Inspection - is responsible for the evaluation of pits and their components. Operations include the non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and inspection of weapons related and non-weapons related assemblies, which contain plutonium-239 metal. PT-7 is also responsible for the NDE associated with pit surveillance activities supporting the Annual Assessment.
PT-8 Plutonium Tooling - is responsible for providing tooling design and manufacturing to aid in to pit production operations.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
