Floor Plan Record/CAD Planner (Planner 1/2)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Planner 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Maintenance and Site Services Data Group (MSS-DATA) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking interest from highly talented, motivated, and customer-oriented applicants as a Planner 1/2 Position. MSS-DATA delivers critical facility data services and is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of infrastructure/asset management across the institution and is also responsible for required DOE and NNSA reporting.

This position supports the MSS-DATA group in the Floor Plan of Record and Archibus programs. The Floor Plan of Record program supports initiatives tied to the management of all facility floor plans at the Labs. Archibus, LANL's Space Management System, tracks ownership information for all facility assets at LANL. This position will be working to update computer-aided design (CAD) drawings to accurately reflect updates to facility space, perform on-site field validation of floor plans, and publishing the floor plans in Archibus. The selected candidate will work in a highly motivated and cohesive team to bring forth effective results.

Planner 1 ($66,100 - $103,600)

  • Participates in the management, planning, and development of the Floor Plan of Record program to help meet institutional space needs ensuring that assigned work objectives are attained and schedules are met.
  • Conducts field walk-downs that include: measurement of both interior and exterior facility dimensions, room use categorization based on industry standard and Department of Energy (DOE) or National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) defined criteria, utilization assessments, and general working conditions within facilities.
  • Functions as point of contact and provide floor plan consultation to customer groups.
  • Assesses project issues and develops resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives.
  • Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding Laboratory policies and programs, industry practices, or applicable regulatory changes affecting facility, infrastructure, site planning, or space management policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
  • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to development of floor plan.
  • May initiate, compile, and deliver concise and accurate oral and written presentations to internal and external customers on project status and changes.
Planner 2 ($80,400 - $127,900)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position will:

  • Prioritize projects based on institutional needs.
  • Provide critical thinking and leadership skills.
  • Lead walk-down activities.
  • Assist with planning and coordination.
  • Conduct safety and security briefings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.




What You Need



Minimum Job Requirements:

Analytical Skills: Demonstrated experience analyzing and interpreting construction and as-built drawings to develop floor plans. Experience using various methods of data collection, including, but not limited to: measuring devices, tablets, cameras, data system integrations, facility manager/maintenance coordinator interviews, and tenant interviews.

Maintenance Operations: On-the-job experience or formal trade school education in building construction systems, such as architectural and structural systems. Working knowledge of related work hazards and safety programs. Experience researching, assembling, and/or evaluating information or data regarding programs, industry practices, or applicable regulatory changes affecting facility and infrastructure.

Computer Systems: Experience working with databases to collect, manage, interpret, and report large volumes of data.

Communication: Demonstrated experience initiating, compiling, and delivering concise and accurate oral and written presentations on project status, changes, and alternative approaches.

Additional Job Requirements for Planner 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Analytical Skill: Strong critical thinking, prioritization, and leadership skills

Maintenance Operations: Advanced experience and ability to understand and interpret mechanical, electrical, and plumbing documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics. Experience participating in the planning and development of short-term and long-range planning of facility assessments to meet program requirements.

Computer Systems: Demonstrated experience developing drawings in Autodesk AutoCAD or similar programs. Knowledge of Archibus Integrated Workplace Management System or similar programs.

Education/Experience at Planner 1 level: Position requires a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Education/Experience at Planner 2 level:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • One year AutoCAD or equivalent CAD experience.
  • Ability to analyze facility as builts and drawings.
  • Ability to understand and interpret building, room, and space data.
  • Revit or equivalent 3D modeling and design experience.
  • Knowledge of LiDAR Scanning.
  • Knowledge of Archibus Integrated Workplace Management System.
  • Working knowledge of related work hazards and safety programs.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's infrastructure and site planning policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to obtain Q Clearance.


Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Standing, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, and carrying & lifting 5-10 pounds, both indoors and outside of buildings.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
