This position will be filled at either the ESH Professional 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
ESH Professional 3 ($114,700 - $191,200)
As a Hazardous Energy Control (HEC) Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting C and/or D shift operations, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of 24/7 activities associated with the modernization of the TA-55 infrastructure and capabilities. Working as part of the Hazardous Energy and Operations Group (OSH-HEO) within the Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSH), you will provide expert-level support, oversight, and leadership for the Electrical Safety and Lockout/Tagout (LO/TO) for Hazardous Energy Control Programs, as well as other related safety initiatives. You will serve as the primary on-shift resource for hazardous energy control issues, providing real-time field support, issuing locks and tags, reviewing work control and electrical risk assessment documents, and ensuring worker access to qualified technical expertise during off-shift operations.
In this leadership role, you will:
- Oversee and evaluate program implementation to ensure consistent application of electrical safety and hazardous energy control requirements across all shifts and facilities.
- Develop, maintain, and improve policies, procedures, forms, and tools that support safe and compliant work execution.
- Analyze safety metrics, investigation results, and operational trends to identify emerging issues, implement proactive corrective measures, and drive continuous improvement.
- Assess training methodologies, instructor qualifications, and program priorities to ensure alignment between field operations and institutional training needs.
- Serve as a qualified instructor for LO/TO and electrical safety courses, providing high-quality instruction for C and D shift personnel.
- Partner with managers, facility operations personnel, and contractors to deliver effective safety solutions and ensure electrical safety and LO/TO needs are met across 24/7 operations.
- Benchmark LANL programs against other DOE laboratories to incorporate best practices and maintain world-class safety standards.
ESH Professional 4 ($138,500 - $233,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the ESH Professional serves as an institutional expert in HEC, Electrical Safety, and LO/TO Programs. The incumbent provides strategic leadership and advanced technical guidance with Laboratory-wide impact, developing and implementing innovative solutions to complex and high-hazard operational challenges.
The ESH Professional 4 uses broad expertise and independent judgment to influence policy, establish standards, and drive continuous improvement across 24/7 operations. This includes:
- Leading the development of advanced concepts, procedures, and tools that set institutional direction for hazardous energy control and electrical safety.
- Advising Laboratory management and external partners on high-level technical and programmatic decisions with mission and compliance implications.
- Representing LANL in DOE and national forums to benchmark and integrate best practices.
- Mentoring peers and providing senior-level instruction and evaluation in LO/TO and Electrical Safety Programs.
At this level, assignments are self-initiated and carried out with wide latitude, where sound judgment and innovation directly influence Laboratory safety performance and mission success.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience identifying and controlling a wide range of hazardous energy sources and associated hazards across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other systems.
- Proven ability to perform and review hazardous energy risk assessments, applying the hierarchy of controls to develop effective, field-ready hazard mitigation strategies.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards related to hazardous energy control, including OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S and 1910.147, NFPA 70E, and related DOE requirements.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and improving LO/TO and electrical safety program implementation, including procedure development, field verification, and authorization processes.
- Experience evaluating and resolving safety issues, conducting causal analyses, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Advanced ability to interpret complex operational and technical conditions, perform problem-solving and research, evaluate alternative solutions, and document and communicate recommendations effectively.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex electrical safety and hazardous energy control concepts to both technical and non-technical personnel across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated commitment to proactive safety leadership and field engagement, providing workers with immediate, expert-level support to ensure safe and compliant operations during off-shift and 24/7 activities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
Additional Job Requirements for ESH Professional 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Recognized expert-level knowledge and extensive experience in HEC, electrical safety, and LO/TO with a demonstrated ability to lead and advance institutional programs and initiatives.
- Expert-level knowledge and practical experience conducting hazardous energy risk assessments and applying the hierarchy of controls to develop effective mitigation strategies for complex or high-hazard operations.
- Comprehensive expert-level knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures governing hazardous energy control, including OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 and 1910 Subpart S, NFPA 70E, and applicable DOE directives.
- Proven expertise in performing and managing risk assessments, corrective actions, and issues management processes, ensuring continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.
- Expert-level understanding of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, facility operating configurations, and lockout/tagout policies and procedures within nuclear and high-hazard environments.
- Extensive experience with complex problem-solving and analytical activities, including research, evaluation of alternatives, and development of technically sound, practical solutions.
- Exceptional ability to conceptualize, communicate, and advocate ESHQ principles, effectively engaging with both technical and non-technical personnel across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring ability, providing technical direction, peer guidance, and field engagement to ensure proactive safety management and mission-aligned 24/7 operations.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Master's degree preferred.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.
This position is subject to DOE 426.2A which requires a Baccalaureate Degree, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1-year nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Expert-level experience using data analysis, performance metrics, and trend evaluation to influence fact-based decision-making and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Laboratory's Integrated Safety Management (ISM) policies, practices, and procedures, and demonstrated ability to apply ISM principles to hazardous energy control and electrical safety operations.
- Expert knowledge of the Laboratory's Electrical Safety and LO/TO Programs, policies, and procedures, including implementation across nuclear and high-hazard environments.
- Experience developing and delivering training for workers exposed to hazardous energy, including creation of course materials and instructional aids that align with regulatory and institutional requirements.
- Demonstrated success providing instruction and field mentoring to ensure worker understanding and effective implementation of controls that reduce the likelihood of exposure to hazardous energy.
- Professional certifications such as NFPA 70E Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or NM State Certified Electrical Instructor are highly desirable.
- Experience working in DOE or nuclear facility environments, with a thorough understanding of associated safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.
- Active Q clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: The higher level position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
