This position will be filled at either the Health Physics Field Coordinator 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Health Physics Field Coordinator 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)

RP-TA55 Waste Facilities has a need for a Health Physics Field Coordinator 1 (HPFC1) to support programmatic, maintenance and construction work activities and radiation protection compliance surveys on the day shift at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Technical Area (TA) 55. Reporting to the RP-TA55 Waste Facilities team leader, the HPFC will assist in the implementation of the Radiation Protection Program (RPP), supporting work execution, and coordinating Radiological Control Technician (RCTs) resources. Provides Health Physics radiation protection services and support and ensures radiological controls are correctly applied for radiological work and high hazard radiological work.. In addition, HPFC will interact with construction, maintenance, and programmatic personnel to help ensure the appropriate radiological controls are in place, provide guidance and mentoring to assigned RCTs, respond to radiological incidents, and ensure work documents and permits (e.g., Radiological Work Permits) are readily available for work.

Health Physics Field Coordinator 2 ($104,100 - $172,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Health Physics Field Coordinator 2 will have: specialized knowledge and demonstrated experience responding to radiological incidents and emergencies, demonstrated in-depth problem solving and analytical skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to prepare and present radiological safety/protection reports to peers and managers in the directorate. Must be able to obtain TSQP qualification (LANL provided training). May act as lead person or technical advisor on small to medium projects related to radiation protection. May act as a mentor and provide technical and professional to less experienced health physicists and technicians.

Minimum Job Requirements:


Health Physics Field Coordinator 1

  • Knowledge of and experience with technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques of health physics to perform radiological work planning; ensuring radiological controls are correctly applied, including high hazard work.
  • Demonstrate expereince and skill providing technical oversight for radiation protection activities of a work unit, or sub-unit, to ensure compliance with procedures and 10 CFR 835.
  • Expereince providing radiation protection support for radiological work, including workplace surveillance and analysis/interpretation of radiological data.
  • Expereince providing accurate and legal compilation and retention of radiological records.
  • Knowledge and experience preparing and presenting radiological safety/protection reports.
  • Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiation control procedures to both technical and non- technical personnel.
  • TSQP qualified or recommended by RP management to become TSQP qualified due to demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated knowledge of radiation protections reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a mutually respectful and engaging work environment, promoting collaboration at all levels.
  • The selected candidate must be able to obtain and hold a DOE Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Health Physics Field Coordinator 2
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Specialized knowledge and experience with nuclear material radiation protection principles, practices and ability to implement those principles in at least one area of health physics (e.g. accelerators, reactors, actinides, dosimetry, instrumentation, etc.).
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.
  • Demonstrated in-depth problem-solving skills, analytical skills and the ability to execute special assignments or procedure development consistent with radiation protection regulatory drivers.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Skill in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports to peers and managers in the directorate.
  • TSQP qualified or recommended by RP management to become TSQP qualified due to demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.

Training/Certifications: Ability to obtain DOE Radiological Control Technician Certification required

Education/Experience for Health Physics Field Coordinator 1: Position requires an Associate's Degree in Health Physics, Business, or related field and 2 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience for Health Physics Field Coordinator 2: Position requires Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Business, or related field and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE 426.2A: Requires a High School Degree

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of actinide processing health physics.
  • Working knowledge of air monitoring and contamination control, including containment tents and glove bags.
  • Working knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Active Q clearance

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds, and ability to wear respiratory/protective equipment.

Work Environment: Work at high eleveation (7300-foot) in physically demanding environments near sources of ionizing radiation/contamination; indoors in radiological work areas.

Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
