Manufacturing Engineer 2/3 (R&D Engineer 2/3)

What You Will Do

The Stockpile Production Management Stockpile - Integration Office (SPM-SI) is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer 2 or Manufacturing Engineer 3 to join the Production Optimization Team. This team will focus on the following:
  • Optimizing factory design, product workflows, work standards, and engineering best practices
  • Implementing strategic initiatives such as Windchill Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, Requirements Management Systems (ex: PTC Codebeamer), Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies
  • Ensuring the Production Agency (factory) is ready for future weapon systems missions

The mission of the LANL Stockpile Production Management Office is to ensure the effectiveness of the stockpile by providing key components and services with quality, reliability, and responsiveness. SPM is the head office for program management of the NA-12 production agency portfolio enabling production of detonators, non-nuclear components, and actinide activities (pit surveillance, detonator surveillance, and power supply production). SPM is responsible for the execution of strategic projects that guide LANL's Production Agencies (PAs) operational development.

You will report directly to the Project-Program Director 5 for SPM-SI.

Manufacturing Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

Manufacturing Engineer 3 ($128,00 - $215,900)

The major job roles will include the following:
  • Production Optimization Team - You will act in both lead and support roles in the team with modernizing the Production Agency via optimizing the design of the factory and product workflows. Examples include work center and production line layout, and integrated production workflows. You will also develop and implement manufacturing work standards and engineering best practices.
  • Windchill Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) - SPM-SI is currently implementing Windchill PLM for the Detonator Production Agency. You will be a subject matter expert in this software, helping to lead the implementation, and providing support to the engineering staff for BOM management, Process Plans, and Change Management. Your role will include project management and provide program support to ensure it is delivered on time and within budget. This role will require cross-division, cross-site, and cross-agency collaborations with PRIDE and NNSA to ensure overall successful program execution.
  • Readiness for Future Weapon Systems - You will be asked to lead or support various efforts related to ensuring that the Production Agency is ready to manufacture components for future weapon systems. This would include travel to other Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) sites, collaborating with Design Agencies, identifying needed production capabilities and/or equipment, and potentially leading or supporting implementation of new capabilities.
  • Industry 4.0/5.0 Initiatives - There are many projects currently underway in Weapons Production to modernize the factories and implement Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies. Some of these projects include SAP ERP, Solumina MES, Digital Work Instructions, and connected factory floor. You may lead or support some of these projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in an engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, ability, and experience in the following areas: manufacturing concepts, systems, processes, and tools (examples include factory and product workflow design); engineering concepts, methods, and tools (examples include Models-Based Design, MBSE, PLM and CAD software, tooling and fixtures)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including personal integrity and accountability; effective oral and written communications; commitment to quality and excellence with a broad institutional motivation and focus; experience mentoring and developing people; strong team building and conflict resolution skills; and the ability to influence personnel at all levels to include internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in conduct of operations associated with manufacturing and operating in laboratory type facilities.

Additional Job Requirements for Manufacturing Engineer 3 (R&D Engineer 3):

In addition to the requirements outlined above, Manufacturing Engineer 3 requires the following:
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines
  • Expert knowledge, skills, ability, and experience in the following areas: manufacturing concepts, systems, processes, and tools (examples include factory and product workflow design); engineering concepts, methods, and tools (examples include Models-Based Design, MBSE, PLM and CAD software, tooling and fixtures)
  • Expert-level experience recommending solutions to complex issues
  • Expert-level experience balancing demands of multiple projects with organizational goals in a high-pressure/high-consequence environment

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Expert knowledge and/or experience working in a manufacturing organization utilizing PLM software such as PTC Windchill or Siemens Teamcenter
  • Expert knowledge and/or experience with building and managing eBOMs, mBOMs, and Process Plans in PLM
  • Expert knowledge of Creo, PTC Codebeamer RMS software systems
  • Demonstrated experience using Windchill MPMLink
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SAP ERP and Solumina MES, or other similar ERP and MES systems
  • Demonstrated experience with integration of PLM, MES, and/or ERP
  • Demonstrated experience with IIoT and/or Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies, to include implementation
  • Demonstrated experience achieving required objectives in a production environment
  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM and on-site work is required.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
