What You Will Do

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! The Plutonium Capability Low Level Waste and WCRRF Waste Operations group (NPI-10) is looking for highly motivated individuals to serve as Manufacturing Manager 3 to join our TA-55 LLW Operations. The shift offers adifferential pay of the basic hourly rate. NPI-10 ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB) and the Waste Characterization, reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF). We also provide ample opportunities to learn new skillsets and maintain a supportive environment when challenges arise. How we do our work is just as important as what we do. Our team members comply with a variety of nuclear management related requirements; work independently on challenging concurrent projects requiring close cooperation, adaptability, initiative, and willingness to provide support wherever needed to meet LANL's National Security Mission.

The MM3 will work directly with programmatic and facility operations staff to manage activities throughout TA-55, CMR, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or WCRRF. Additionally, they will oversee the day-to-day operations of the team, as well as develop and deliver improved, customer-focused, processes and procedures. They will serve as a first-line manager assisting in the oversight of a robust workforce and managing multifaceted activities.

This position will require 24/7 coverage, which willinvolve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Primary duties of the MM3 may include but are not limited to:
  • Understands and implements Integrated Safety Management (ISM) line management responsibilities for their organization including but not limited to integrating safety into every task, pausing/stopping work, modeling exemplary behavior, fostering open communication, engaging workers in the field, rewarding positive behavior and addressing deficiencies through accountability. Integrated Safety Management (means worker health and safety, environment, security, and quality) is a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees and managers.
  • Fosters a culture that values continuous improvement and organizational learning that results in the prevention of events and provides the controls necessary to promote safe and secure work.
  • Serves as deputy first-line manager and assists in the overall management of a cohesive, high performing group. Assists in supporting and promoting the organization's vision, goals and strategies; aligns strategic priorities of one's own group with that of the larger organization.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge and understanding of facility operational requirements and works with the group leader to ensure compliance, safety, security, quality and conduct of operations, engineering, maintenance and training in the performance of work.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality products and/or services within the division; enforces adherence to quality standards; achieves balance between the need to meet both productivity goals and quality standards.
  • Assists in managing the group's business performance to include financial and human resource management, procurement, property, travel, and monitoring and reporting of performance metrics. Applies Laboratory defined business policies, processes and practices and sound financial stewardship in all financial matters.
  • Responsible for all aspects of personnel management, including but not limited to: managing headcount, forecasting and budget(s) associated with group, directing assignments, employee hiring and onboarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff including annual performance discussions, identification of growth opportunities and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.
  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Ensures daily open communication with workers (including subcontractors) that promotes an environment where workers feel comfortable bringing errors, mistakes, system weaknesses and issues to your attention.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Regulation: Knowledge of business operations to include financial, human resources, procurement, and other related business activities.

Skills/Expertise:
  • Knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Transuranic (TRU), Low Level Waste (LLW) and hazardous (RCRA) waste management; manufacturing, and technology; weapons component manufacturing; manufacturing quality and production control and/or program management; nuclear materials research, process development, and technology demonstrations.
  • Knowledge of and experience planning for and managing tactical execution of work.
  • Experience identifying, acquiring and managing resources in support of organizational deliverables, scope and schedule.

Communication: Interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment.

Leadership: Experience in supervising multidisciplinary teams of technicians and/or professional staff in a technical environment.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science in engineering or related science and 4 years of nuclear experience. Education or experience that is job related may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may fulfill 3 of 4 years of nuclear experience on a one-for-one time basis.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated application of DOE or LANL waste management regulations and requirements, waste administrative requirements, waste acceptance criteria, and waste certification requirements.
  • Familiarity or experience working in support of hazardous waste management and/or within a nuclear facility.
  • An active Q clearance with HRP.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
