The selected candidate will support the Nuclear Weapons Cyber Assurance Laboratory (NWCAL), which focuses on operational technology assurance as well as software assurance related to operational technology (OT). This role will lead research and development (R&D) efforts in network traffic analysis, cybersecurity, and software assurance to support LANL's national security mission.
The position demands a deep technical expertise in network protocols, traffic capture, and security analysis, with a focus on ensuring the security and reliability of mission-critical operational technology systems. This scientist will be responsible for analyzing network vulnerabilities, researching cybersecurity solutions, and developing novel techniques to advance OT security and assurance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Network Traffic Capture & Analysis: Perform and analyze network traffic captures using tools such as Wireshark, with the ability to convert and analyze data in PCAP format. Deep expertise in network analysis, including the ability to interpret PCAP data, identify network anomalies, and analyze traffic patterns.
Operational Technology Assurance: Research and implement cybersecurity solutions specifically for OT systems, ensuring the integrity and security of industrial control systems and embedded technologies. Expertise experience with cybersecurity tools and methodologies related to network defense and software assurance.
Protocol Expertise: Expert-level understanding of network communication protocols, including TCP/IP, UDP, and operational technology (OT) protocols. OT protocols can include Modbus, PROFINET, Profibus etc. Comprehensive knowledge of networking protocols, including TCP/IP, UDP, and operational technology communication protocols.
Security & Assurance: Identify network vulnerabilities, detect anomalies, and enhance software assurance for OT environments. Strong problem-solving skills for identifying and mitigating network security threats in OT environments.
Scientific Research & Innovation: Develop and apply novel research techniques in cybersecurity and OT security, expanding on existing efforts or establishing new research directions. Advanced ability to formulate and test hypotheses, conduct research, and recommend solutions to technical challenges.
Technical Communication: Publish research findings, contribute to technical reports, and present results to internal and external stakeholders. Advanced experience in technical writing, publishing research, and presenting findings to professional and government audiences.
Mentorship & Team Development: Mentor junior scientists and engineers, contribute to scientific integrity, and foster an inclusive and innovative work environment.
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of hardware and firmware security concepts.
- Familiarity with basic binary analysis, including static and dynamic analysis of compiled code.
- Experience with cybersecurity frameworks and methodologies for anomaly detection and network security in OT environments.
- Understanding of software assurance and vulnerability research techniques as they relate to industrial control systems and embedded technologies.
- Active DOE Q Clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
