What You Will Do

The Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping, NPI-7, group is looking for a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician to join our team. NPI-7 is extremely busy providing the safe, efficient and compliant container management and shipping of all radioactive and hazardous material generated at various facilities, to include the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), Waste Characterization, Reduction, Repackaging Facility (WCRRF), the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF) and the Radio Assay and Nondestructive Testing (RANT) Facility. The Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 2 will interface with teams within the division and with other groups within TA-55 and the Laboratory. If selected, you will work under direct supervision and will contribute to the operations of hazardous and radioactive material management processes. Specific duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to, handling and inspecting drums and/or other containers of waste, operating forklifts and/or other mechanical loading/handling equipment and keeping and tracking related documents to assure compliance. This position involves performing work both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions. Our team members comply with a variety of nuclear management related requirements; work independently on challenging concurrent projects, requiring close cooperation, adaptability, initiative and willingness to provide support wherever needed to meet LANLs national security mission.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Regulations: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of hazardous material. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports.

Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience operating mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices. Demonstrated skills in mechanical maintenance and testing. Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs. Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.

Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work tasks and manage tasks concurrently with minimal or no supervision.

Clearance and Mandatory Certifications: The ability to obtain a Q-clearance, Human Reliability Program (HRP) and Fissile Material Handler (FMH) certification.

DOE Order 426.2A: DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

Regulation: Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure. Experience with nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization and waste management

Skills/Expertise: Working knowledge of shipping container operations that may include but not limited to staging, visual and dimensional inspections, cleaning, inventory tracking and Tamper Indication Device (TID) application and removal.

Training: Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator. Site specific training at TA-55, RLUOB, TWF, RANT, RLWTF, and/or CMR.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
