What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

NPI-7 is looking for a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician to join our team! NPI-7 operates in a highly active and fast-paced environment, providing safe, efficient and compliant shipping of all radioactive and hazardous materials generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF) and the Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility (RANT). The position requires flexibility, as duties are performed both indoors and outdoors, often under varying weather conditions. This position will require non-normal business hours, 24/7 coverage and therefore may require working a rotating shift schedule that includes nights and weekends.

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 2 ($53,700 - 82,500)

The Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 2 will collaborate closely with teams across the division as well as with other groups within TA-55 and the Laboratory. Under direct supervision, you will support the safe and compliant management of hazardous and radioactive materials that are essential to LANL's mission. Primary responsibilities include handling and inspecting drums and other waste containers, operating forklifts and other specialized mechanical handling equipment, and maintaining precise documentation to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements. This position requires performing duties both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, demanding flexibility, attention to detail, and resilience. Team members are expected to adhere to a broad range of nuclear management protocols while demonstrating the ability to work independently on complex, concurrent projects that require adaptability, initiative, and effective collaboration. Ultimately, success in this role is defined by a strong commitment to advancing LANL's national security mission through dependable and proactive support wherever it is most needed.

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3 ($64,700 - $101,400)

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 will play a key role in supporting safe and compliant operations within TA-55 and across the Laboratory, working closely with both divisional teams and other groups to ensure mission success. In this position, the selected candidate will be responsible for a wide range of activities, including the safe handling, packaging, and documentation of hazardous and radioactive materials in accordance with regulatory and Laboratory requirements. The role involves operating and maintaining mechanical lifting equipment, such as gantry and bridge cranes as well as forklifts, to facilitate the movement and staging of materials. Additional responsibilities include the management and oversight of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) storage areas, ensuring proper segregation, labeling, and tracking of materials to maintain compliance with environmental and safety standards. The technician will also be accountable for ensuring that all processes, results, and materials meet rigorous quality specifications, with final products completed accurately, safely, and on schedule. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, technical skill in operating specialized equipment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to uphold LANL's commitment to operational excellence and national security.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Regulations: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of hazardous material. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Communication: Demonstrated ability to follow detailed procedures accurately, both orally and in writing, as well as experience contributing to the preparation of reports.

Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience operating mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices. Demonstrated skills in mechanical maintenance and testing. Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs. Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.

Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work tasks and manage tasks concurrently with minimal or no supervision.

Clearance and Mandatory Certifications: The ability to obtain a Q-clearance, and Fissile Material Handler (FMH) certification.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED)

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3:

Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to identify technical problems, apply analysis and testing to determine effective solutions, and accurately document and communicate results.

Independent Judgement: Demonstrated experience performing work and prioritizing tasks with nominal supervision, as well as contributing to a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.

Customer Service: Proven ability to deliver high-quality customer service.

Education/Experience for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Training/Certifications: Ability to maintain relevant certification and training requirements for the performance of their duties (e.g., FMH, etc).

Desired Qualifications

Regulation: Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure. Experience with nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization and waste management

Skills/Expertise: Working knowledge of shipping container operations that may include but not limited to staging, visual and dimensional inspections, cleaning, inventory tracking and Tamper Indication Device (TID) application and removal.

Training: Required qualifications include Radworker, HAZWOPER, and RCRA certifications, along with the ability to obtain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator. Candidates must also be able to complete site-specific training at TA-55, RLUOB, TWF, RANT, RLWTF, and/or CMR as assigned.

Skills/Expertise: Experience and participation in audits of material and/or management activities. The ability to obtain and maintain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator.

Regulations: Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure. Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.

Clearance: Active Q clearance.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
