What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level

As a Project Engineer within Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE-DO), you will serve as the technical lead across the full lifecycle of projects supporting the PF-4 facility. You will work directly with facility users to define technical needs, develop scopes of work, and deliver engineering solutions that improve system performance, reliability, and safety.

You will coordinate with design engineers, system engineers, construction teams, and subcontractors to develop, review, and implement technical solutions. This includes leading design development and reviews, managing technical change control during execution, and ensuring alignment between project outcomes and mission requirements.

Projects may range from modifications to nuclear safety systems to facility upgrades and equipment installations. You will be responsible for maintaining technical quality, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, and delivering complete documentation through project closeout.

This role directly supports national security missions, including nuclear weapons stewardship and modernization programs.

Lower Level Title $96,600 - $158,000

  • Support scope development and engineering deliverables with guidance from senior staff
  • Participate in design reviews and technical coordination across disciplines
  • Assist with managing technical changes during project execution


Higher Level Title $106,400 - $176,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

  • Lead scope development and manage engineering deliverables independently
  • Facilitate design reviews and drive technical decision making
  • Lead coordination across engineering disciplines and external partners
  • Own technical change control and resolution of field issues

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to support engineering projects involving multiple disciplines, including participation in scope development, design activities, and technical coordination.
  • Basic understanding of engineering design processes, including development of scopes of work, engineering documentation, and design review cycles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and external partners to support project execution.
  • Experience working in a team environment to resolve technical issues and support implementation of engineering solutions.


Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience leading technical aspects of engineering projects, including independently developing scope, managing engineering deliverables, and coordinating across disciplines.
  • Proven ability to facilitate design reviews, drive technical decision making, and manage change control during project execution.
  • Ability to independently resolve complex technical issues and provide engineering direction during implementation.


Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degrees can be considered as experience equivalency. Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.



Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of DOE or DOD codes and standards such as ASME, NQA 1, IBC, IEEE, or NFPA
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering and operational standards, including Engineering Standards Manual and Conduct of Engineering
  • Experience with project scheduling or cost tracking tools such as P6, MS Project, or EVMS
  • Understanding of subcontracting or procurement processes for engineering services
  • Ability to qualify as an Administrative Subcontract Technical Representative and pass Project Engineer qualification requirements within required timeframes


Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
