This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer 2 $106,400 - $176,000
The Project Engineer 2 will facilitate and champion the design development, design review, and design acceptance while working with internal and external subject matter experts. They will engage with Work Execution and Construction Management to implement design and will manage change control to the approved design by managing the engineering response to deviations when applicable. During all steps and phases of the project, the Project Engineer is expected to ensure the technical solutions continue to meet the facility user's needs. At the completion of the project, the Project Engineer will be responsible for close-out activities, collecting all documentation, test reports, designs, drawings, etc. generated during the lifespan of the project and compiling them in accordance with LANL's Document Control mandates.

The Project Engineer 3 performs as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. As well as lead and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. The Project Engineer 3 will also manage engineering design efforts, which may be performed by internal and/or external engineering design teams. The Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 will also manage design reviews and assure comments are implemented by facilitating the resolution of comments and ensure delivery of the design product. For all design efforts, this includes verification of complaint design delivery at each stage (i.e., 30/60/90/100 %).
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of basic construction engineering principles.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering principles and having applied these principles on the job.
- Awareness of national quality requirements standards, such as ASME, NQA-1, ISO 9000 or similar.
- Experience with participation on or leading an execution supporting team resolving technical and construction issues.
- Detail Oriented, experience working with multiple organizations and individuals under tight schedule deadlines.
- Familiarity with the LANL Conduct Of Engineering Program, or similar program covering the conduct of an engineering organization.
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Experience working with the integrated project team to assure scope, requirements tracking, safety in design, etc. are correctly implemented.
- Experience working with LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives and Subject Matter Experts (SME) for identification and resolution of issues within these areas.
- Experience planning and forecasting project engineering staffing needs.
- Experience reviewing engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating variances and developing corrective actions when needed.
- Experience adhering to and enforcing the policies, programs, procedures, and practices required under the LANL Conduct of Engineering program.
- Experience mentoring junior project engineers and providing oversight of their work.
- Experience participating in process improvement initiatives.
- Experience managing externally executed design efforts, including contract management, as required.
Education/Experience at lower level:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives and Subject Matter Experts (SME) for identification and resolution of issues within these areas.
- Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT)
- Professional registration with a recognized state licensing board.
- Advanced degree in an engineering or technical field.
- Familiarity with DOE standards and Orders, e.g., DOE O 413.3b, DOE-STD-1189, DOE-STD-1066, etc.
- Advanced degree in relevant engineering/technical field.
- Professional registration as a professional engineer or registered architect.
- Awareness of NRC or DOE/NNSA nuclear/radiological facilities or projects, and of DOE standards and Orders, e.g., DOE O 413.3b, DOE-STD-1189, DOE-STD-1066, etc.
- Current or previous experience as a certified Control Account Manager (CAM) under the Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
- Current or previous experience working as a Subcontract Technical Representative (STR) for a design contract.
- Experience developing engineering schedules using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
