What You Will Do

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! The Plutonium Capability Transuranic Waste Management group, Nuclear Process Infrastructure-6 (NPI-6) is looking for a highly motivated individual to serve as an Operations Support Specialist (OSS) and join our TA-55 TRU Waste Operations Team.

The Operations Support Specialist (OSS) will interface with teams within the NPI Division and with other groups at TA-55 and the Laboratory. The OSS responsibilities will include compliance with a variety of nuclear management related requirements and working independently on challenging concurrent projects requiring collaborations, adaptability and initiative. OSS will provide administrative and technical support to the team of technicians that move, load, transport, and store hazardous containers and/or approved materials, The OSS will also verify accuracy of the documented characterization information associated with waste containers/approved materials.

  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Provides direct support of operations in programs, facilities, or organizations that have an operational or process-based deliverable.
  • Ensures that the process is followed through to completion with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.
  • Follows established procedures, maintains documentation such as record-keeping, budget and cost-tracking, inventory-tracking; develops documentation when necessary.
  • Communicates and coordinates with team-members, supervisors, and other involved organizations to ensure that the deliverable will be efficiently met, obstacles are anticipated, and priorities are clearly understood.
  • Assists with the development of detailed plans to manage processes, scope, quality, efficiency, risk to deliverables, communications, and professional responsibility
  • Performs various administrative tasks such as procurements, travel administrative contract administraation, resource scheduling, and office and personnel support.
  • Assists with and coordinates the review and revision of procedures, scope, and process development and improvement. Provides issues management support for issues of moderately complex scope, including the compilation, review, and assessment of data and the development of management assessments and/or recommendations.
  • Assists in developing corrective actions that accurately address apparent and root cause analysis, data analysis, project management, safety and coordination of presentations and briefings and conducting critiques.
  • Provides customer service to internal customers and may provide customer service to external customers.
  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Provides resolutions to an assortment of problems of a moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Contributes to the fulfillment of projects and organizational objectives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated application of one or more of the following: state, federal, DOE, and LANL environmental and waste management regulations and requirements, waste administrative requirements, waste acceptance criteria, and waste certification requirements.
  • Ability to ensure that processes are followed through with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team while interacting successfully with all levels of staff and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with customers in a customer service-related setting.

Education: Position requires a Associate's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires a high school diploma.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working within LANL Policies and Procedures

• Knowledge of TA-55 facility operations and NPI

• Proficiency with the Laboratory's Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS)

• Radworker, HAZWOPER and RCRA certification

• Familiarity with waste operations in a Nuclear Facility

• Ability to obtain a Q-clearance and HRP certification

• Due to federal restrictions contained in the current National Defense Authorization Act, citizens of the People's Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea, and the Russian Federation, who are not Lawful Permanent Residents ("green card" holders) are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, which includes Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Work Schedule: This position will require 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
