What You Will Do

The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Simulation, Computing and Theory (ALDSCT) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our directorate office. The Operations Support Specialist (OSS) will provide professional management and leadership of key operational and business projects and programs, as well as broader professional activities support. The selected candidate will lead and execute a broad scope of activities in support of the ALDSCT directorate mission work.

The OSS will work closely with the Associate Laboratory Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Staff Operations Manager and will be responsible for the ALDSCT Mentoring Program, processes and projects to facilitate collaboration and communication across ALDSCT and worker engagement. To be most successful in this role, you will need to be an energetic, customer-focused individual, capable of providing organized, concise project and program support with excellent communication and collaboration skills, who is capable of quickly changing focus, acting independently, and is comfortable with a broadly defined scope of work in operational support of the directorate and divisions.

Provides advanced input to and oversees various administrative functions in conjunction with or in support of operational and business projects and programs. Participates in or leads special/emergent projects. Works both independently and collaboratively to review and develop or maintain management and support programs.

Leadership, Communication, and Interpersonal Skills:

Leads communication and coordination effectively with team-members, staff, managers, and other involved organizations to ensure priorities are understood, problems are identified and have plans for resolution, and that the deliverables are relevant to the higher-level scope. Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. Facilitates collaboration and worker engagement. Exhibits excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills while interacting effectively with people throughout the organization hierarchy and in partnership with internal support organizations.

Impact, Decision Making and Problem Solving:

Works on significant, unique or complex tasks, provides solutions that are highly creative and where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Has impact on success of current and future concepts, projects and programs.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Expertise:
  • Advanced knowledge of LANL organizational structure, policies, and procedures, as well as familiarity and understanding of LANL business systems and reporting tools.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
  • Advanced written communications skills including scientific writing. Ability to communicate complex concepts, projects, and programs to technical and non-technical staff.
  • Clearance: DOE Q clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
