What You Will Do

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is the nation's premier plutonium center of excellence. The Pit Technologies (PT) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), is instrumental in delivering top-quality plutonium pit-related products and services. This division focuses on maintaining and enhancing the performance of nuclear components while following rigorous compliance and safety protocols. As a member of the PT-8 Machining Group within the PT Division, you will report directly to the First Line Manager (FLM).

Operations Support Specialist 3 ($87,800 - $143,000)

The successful candidate will perform the job activities listed below, but are not limited to:
  • Provides direct support of operations in programs, facilities, or organizations that have an operational or process-based deliverable.
  • Develops, leads, and/or coordinates various administrative functions in conjunction with or in support of operational program compliance, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling of work activities. Coordinates budgeting, cost tracking, resource planning, and in placing procurements. Coordinates the development of training, delivery of organizational or facility-level training, tracking and assurance of employee training/qualification.
  • Ensures that the process is followed through to completion with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.
  • Follows established procedures, maintains documentation such as record-keeping, budget and cost-tracking, inventory-tracking; develops documentation when necessary.
  • Communicates and coordinates with team-members, supervisors, and other involved organizations to ensure that the deliverable will be efficiently met, obstacles are anticipated, and priorities are clearly understood.
  • Assists with the development of detailed plans to manage processes, scope, quality, efficiency, risk to deliverables, communications, and professional responsibility.
  • Provides customer service to internal customers and may provide customer service to external customers.
  • Contributes to the organization's goals and objectives. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways.
  • Networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise. Requires limited responsibility for making routine contacts on general matters outside of the immediate organization.
  • Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met.
  • Oversee that related tasks are delegated appropriately such as procurement, travel administration, contract administration, resource scheduling, and office and personnel support tasks.
  • Leads communication and coordination with team-members, supervisors, and other involved organizations to ensure priorities are understood by the team, problems are identified and have plans for resolution, and that the deliverables are relevant to the higher-level scope.

  • Ability to follow guidelines for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment
  • Entry-level knowledge of the scope, processes, methodologies and requirements for the particular operation, physical and cyber security or process involved with this role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Entry-level knowledge of Laboratory policies and requirements related to the assigned work.
  • Ability to follow and inform improvements in procedures, policies, and processes
  • Ability to work with team-members, other organizations, and customers and to solve problems.
  • Ability to review, understand, and execute an end-to-end work processes.
  • Ability to work closely with team-members and members of other organizations to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
  • Basic knowledge of Laboratory financial system and processes.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures. Basic knowledge of requirements drivers such as DOE orders, and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory business and operations systems and standard software applications.
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of operations and operational quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Working and demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory business and operations systems and standard software applications.
  • May require Q clearance

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lab procedures, standards, and guides.
  • Skilled in schedule development and maintenance
  • Knowledge of training programs, processes and applicability of training requirements in both nuclear and non-nuclear environments
  • Experience with manufacturing resource planning (MRP) systems.
  • Experience in customer support

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
