The low-energy nuclear physics team (P3) in LANL's Physics Division is seeking for a Post Bachelor intern to perform research on direct measurement of neutron-induced charged particle reactions. The successful candidate will perform Monte Carlo simulations and data analysis relevant to nuclear reaction cross section measurements with the Low-Energy (n,Z) (LENZ) instrument at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The research will involve characterizing background reactions in LENZ-type experiments and assessing their impact on the extraction of reaction yields. This position supports a range of research projects addressing nuclear data needs for fission and fusion energy applications.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant area of nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear engineering, or related areas
- Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research
- Ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both, orally and in writing
Desired Qualifications:
- Programming experience in C/C++ and Python
- Familiarity with Linux operational system
- Familiarity with uncertainty quantification and statistical inference
- Experience working with scientific instrumentation data
Education/Experience:
- Must have earned an Associate's or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) within the last 3 years in an appropriate field,
- Must have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Work Location: The work location for this position has the potential for remote work. Remote work is defined as working offsite that is greater than 2 hours of the Laboratory location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Interns working fully remotely may only work a 5/40 schedule. Interns may not work remotely from Hawaii, Minnesota, Santa Moncia, CA or San Francisco, CA. See Current Restrictions for more information.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
