Pressure Safety Inspector (Engineering Technologist 1)

What You Will Do
Los Alamos National laboratory is seeking an experienced Pressure Vessel inspector for the Maintenance Programs group. This position will report to the Maintenance and Site Services Maintenance Programs Group Lead. The selected candidate will have a strong mechanical background and will perform periodic inspections on Pressure Safety Systems under the direction of senior pressure safety inspectors at Los Alamos.

As a pressure safety inspector for MSS, the selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the pressure safety manager and senior inspectors to develop knowledge and understanding of the pressure safety program. The inspector will learn to use and work in our asset integrity database (PCMS). The selected candidate will be required gain the experience and OJT to certify in NDE examination methods (MT, PT, UTT). The selected candidate will be conduct facility walk-downs to identify new equipment across the lab to be documented into the program's asset integrity software database.

This will be a growth opportunity position in support the Pressure Safety Inspection program. This role will support the inspection of various styles and configurations of Pressure Vessels and equipment. The periodic inspections are a means to ensure code compliance, leak free operation, adequate relief venting, preventative maintenance and follow up on recommended repairs. The inspector will create and maintain inspection records through PC/Tablet based software (PCMS). The inspector will support API 510, API 570 inspections.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in teams to get projects accomplished.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and common software platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on assignments.
  • Working Experience with Pressure Vessels, Piping, Relief devices, Boilers and other Fixed Equipment.
  • Knowledge and or working experience with Visual inspection and NDE examinations.

Training/Certifications: Individual should be certified in accordance to ASNT-TC 1A NDE/NDT Level I or Level 2.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Standing, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, and stooping.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certifications in: API 510, API 570, NDE level 2 (MT, PT, UTT), NBIC commission (IS, R endorsements).
  • Knowledge of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors NB-23 code, and standards related to design, construction, installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, repair, alteration, and re-rating of boilers and pressure vessels, and piping systems.
  • Demonstrated working experience of non-destructive testing techniques and welding processes for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections V and IX.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE and LANL standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
  • At least one year of experience working in a nuclear facility.
  • Awareness of LANL Quality Policies and Procedures.
  • Proficiency with computers and Asset Integrity Software (PCMS).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q
(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
