What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Process & Sampling Technician 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory and support the National Science and Security Mission as a metrologist in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL). The MP&CL is an ISO 17025 accredited calibration laboratory providing traceable calibrations and metrology program support to LANL programs and organizations. Calibration technicians are responsible for performing and documenting calibrations in one or more assigned calibration areas (e.g. dimensional, electrical, and physical).

Process and Sampling Technician 2 ($53,700 - $82,500)

Perform simple to moderately complex measurement and test equipment calibrations in limited assigned area/s using established procedures. Responsible for accurately documenting calibration results. Must adhere to quality and technical procedures to ensure quality results. This position requires entry-level calibration experience.

Process and Sampling Technician 3 ($59,200 - $91,600)

The Process & Sampling Technician 3 performs a broader range of calibration (either within the area or in multiple areas) or more complex calibrations in limited areas. Provides support of accreditation, bench operability, and/or quality control efforts. Applies calibration experience to collaboratively solve calibration issues and equipment troubleshooting. This position requires advanced calibration experience.

What You Need


Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience performing physical calibrations in a government calibration laboratory, commercial calibration laboratory, or a company that calibrates M&TE that it owns.
  • Demonstrated familiarity of calibration concepts, requirements, and processes.
  • Experience in following administrative, quality, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collective team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.
Additional Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Technician 3:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Process and Sampling Technician 3 level requires:
  • Experience performing calibrations in a laboratory environment with an ability to adjust M&TE.
  • Strong understanding of the major elements of a calibration.
  • Familiarity in monitoring calibration equipment trends to identify performance issues.
  • Familiarity with measurement uncertainties, Test Uncertainty Ratios, and guard banding principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ISO17025 quality and technical requirements necessary to support A2LA accreditation activities.
Process and Sampling Technician 2 Education/Experience Required: Position requires a High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years related experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Process and Sampling Technician 3 Education/Experience Required: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Skills
  • Ability to go on occasional domestic travel.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Indysoft or other calibration-related Laboratory Information Management Systems.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
