This position will be filled at either the QA/QC Inspector 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Detonator Production-Inspection Operations (DP-6) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking qualified applicants to join our team as a QA/QC Inspector to provide support for the Detonator Production Enterprise mission by providing sound product quality inspection data we can all stand behind with integrity, innovation, respect, teamwork, and accountability. The successful candidate will typically perform moderate to highly complex inspections for various components and assemblies, which include the development of inspection process and strategies, execution of routine quality instructions and safety procedures, as well as selection and use of appropriate equipment. The components, assemblies, or devices to be inspected are frequently of a complex nature and may require non-routine set-ups and computation of dimensions. A solid foundation in dimensional inspection within the manufacturing and production environment is key to success. Inspection operations include the use of surface plate equipment such as indicators and height gages, surface finish systems, optical measurement systems, physical properties testing equipment, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and other high accuracy metrology M&TE. The selected candidate will be required to provide support as needed to effectively and efficiently execute his/her assigned projects and the related manufacturing and production activities, and maintain and continuously improve the associated processes and capabilities.
QA/QC Inspector 4 ($78,700 - $125,100)
Considered a an advanced-expert proficiency, senior skilled/advanced level position and will be expected to perform various moderate to highly skilled and moderate to high-risk operations independently with no oversight required. Works with broader organizational teams to develop and integrate various highly skilled and high-risk operations and proactively provides mentoring to other staff and oversight to help successfully support various product lines.
- Incumbent develops solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity, and independence.
- Assignments may be broad or narrowly focused, but usually require contributions of original work.
- Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product working with the requestor.
- Sets up and operates advanced inspection tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.
- Uses and interprets engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications, and related data to assist in the evaluation of design factors, conducting operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment, recommending modifications, troubleshooting malfunctions, documenting findings and reporting results.
- Performs in-process quality control and inspection in accordance with statistical processes or other control procedures.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills and strong organizational approach to performing work.
- Attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to proactively seek solutions to a variety of challenges that require close interaction and strong communication with engineers, machinists and inspectors, and other metrology related stakeholders.
- Candidate may provide leadership to our staff to ensure adequate process operations and provides higher level communication and support to meet project deliverables..
- Contributions are of sufficient value to have some impact on the outcome of the entire group accomplishments.
QA/QC Inspector 5 ($85,900 - $139,900)
Considered to be an expert-master proficiency, senior/master level inspector and, in addition to what was outlined at the lower level 4, will be expected to perform various moderate to highly skilled and moderate to high-risk operations independently with no oversight required. Works with broader organizational teams to develop an integrate various highly skilled and high-risk operations and provides mentoring to other staff and oversight to help successfully support various product lines. Develops and performs various highly skilled and high risk as needed and helps ensure adequate process operations.
- Incumbent must demonstrate advanced level sets up and operate advanced inspection tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.
- Assignment may be wide in scope requiring a broad background of experience and capability in all areas of varying technical depth.
- Conversely, assignments may be narrowly focused in areas requiring greater technical depth.
- Advanced application of technical principles, theories, and concepts to proactively seek solutions to a variety of challenges that require close interaction and strong communication with engineers, machinists and inspectors, and other metrology related stakeholders.
- Assist with technical R&D work and gathering/analyzing data needed by engineers and/or customers.
- Ability to prepare analysis, evaluations and recommendations of metrology equipment based on inspection requirements.
- Prior experience in mentoring and team building.
- Serves as a leader and provides a high level of support and communication at all levels to maintain and enhance manufacturing operational excellence to meet project deliverables.
- Contributions are of a sufficient value and scope to have significant impact on project group goals; conversely, incorrect technical decisions can cause significant problems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements for a QA/QC Inspector 4:
Incumbent has demonstrated, and applies, extensive knowledge and skills to complete specialized tasks, has full knowledge of other related disciplines, and a comprehensive understanding of general and technical aspects of the job.
- Demonstrated advanced experience with metrology and dimensional inspection equipment and operations.
- Demonstrated advanced understanding and working knowledge of the principles associated with Measurement & Test Equipment calibration, gage measurement repeatability and reproduce-ability and measurement uncertainty.
- General experience performing basic set-up, alignments, maintenance, operations and/or calibration of conventional tools and/or equipment.
- Comprehensive understanding and demonstrated experience in the interpretation of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, theories, and concepts as they apply to inspection activities.
- Advanced experience working with or knowledge of CAD/CAM software packages such as PTC Creo, SolidWorks, Quindos and/or PC-DMIS CMM software.
- Background in shop mathematics and English-Metric unit conversions including applied trigonometry.
- Demonstrated experience in the ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and specifications.
- Advanced knowledge of manufacturing techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.
- Must be willing to work with hazardous materials in a shop floor environment.
- Proficiency with basic computer programs such as Adobe Acrobat, MS Office, and Outlook.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
Additional requirements for the QA/QC Inspector 5:
Incumbent has demonstrated knowledge and skills in their technical specialty and utilizes abilities as a skilled specialist to contribute to the development of techniques and completes work in innovative and effective ways, applies advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, and contributes to the development of new principles and concepts.
- Master of technical knowledge of inspection methods and quality control field inspections relating to a single discipline. Interfacing with all areas, or in a multi-discipline position assigned to a single area.
- Master of knowledge of and demonstrated experience in metrology and inspections operations.
- Master of knowledge of production activities which relate to an assigned area of responsibility.
- Mastery level experience working with or knowledge of CAD/CAM software packages such as PTC Creo, SolidWorks, Quindos and/or PC-DMIS CMM software.
Education/Experience for QA/QC Inspector 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree or formal Machinist Apprenticeship Program and 4 years of experience in equivalent machining, inspection, examination, or test activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Technical Institute graduation or AA degree preferred.
Education/Experience for QA/QC Inspector 5: Position requires an Associate's Degree or formal Machinist Apprenticeship Program and 6 years of experience in equivalent machining, inspection, examination, or test activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Technical Institute graduation or AA degree preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience working with inspection related equipment, including Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), and familiarity with various software applications and programming..
- Demonstrated experience working with LANL S&CL and/or other NVLAP calibration laboratory sources used to obtain NIST traceable measurements certifications.
- Demonstrated experience with Quality Assurance activities in a manufacturing shop environment.
- Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of nuclear weapons complex manufacturing.
- ASQ Certifications (CQE, CQI, CQT).
- Experience with materials having RAD, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics.
- Active DOE Q Clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
