R&D Development and Fabrication Technician (Development and Fabrication Technician 3/4)

Development and Fabrication Tec 3 $66,100 - $103,600

The Detonation Science and Technology (Q-6) group is seeking an individual to provide technical support specifically in the area of electrical design, fabrication, and assembly of components used in research and development experiments. You must provide an agile response to group member requests for prototyping and fabrication needs, and may include the manufacture of complex parts from a variety of materials with exacting tolerances from drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions. The project portfolios that will be supported are diverse, and you must be able to effectively communicate and interact with scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians in Q-6. You will receive on-the-job training from an experienced electrical technician and have access to a fully-equipped laboratories. The candidate will participate in the collaborative planning of prototype designs; once finalized, they will perform the fabrication and assembly independently as well as part of a team. Additionally you will integrate and deploy components into experiments across DOE facilities.

Development and Fabrication Tec 4 $72,800 - $115,400

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level your will work contribute to the development of new procedures and protocols. You will also recommend solutions to problems affecting project requirements.

The Detonation Science and Technology Group (Q-6) serves the Laboratory and the Nation providing the knowledge base and component design responsibilities for the Nuclear Weapons Program and other critical national security areas. The Group's capabilities include design engineering for nuclear weapon detonators and detonator cable assemblies, design, fabrication, qualification, and installation of test fire control systems, pulse power engineering, advanced detonator design and testing, and applied problem solving. Additional capabilities include expertise in the detonation science and physics of detonator energetic materials, and engineering responsibility for the cradle to grave care of the detonators and detonator cable assemblies used by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Manufacturing Experience

Experience in the design and manufacturing of parts, fixturing, and electrical assemblies.

Electrical Fabrication Skills

Experience in the assembly, testing, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical circuits and other electronics.

Schematics

Fully proficient knowledge and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and electrical schematics.

Communication Skills

Strong oral and written communication skills.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Research & Development Skills

Demonstrated ability to problem solve R&D solutions from design to fabrication.

Electrical Manufacturing Experience

Knowledge and experience in electrical board and additative manufacturing.

Electrical Fabrication Skills

Extensive experience in the assembly, testing, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of printed wire assemblies.

Software Knowledge

CAD/CAM knowledge

Education/Experience Development and Fabrication Tec 3 : Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience Development and Fabrication Tec 4 : Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Printed Circuit Board fabrications training/certificates
  • High explosives handler qualification
  • Soldering, welding, mechanical fabrication experience

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
