What You Will Do

The Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation Group (V-6) of the Verification and Validation Division (V) requires an energetic, customer-focused professional for its operations. The selected candidate will contribute to performance of non-destructive testing, operations, and development. The work environment involves moderate hazards and classified settings, requiring demonstration of a strong commitment towards safety and security. The selected candidate will be expected to work independently and as a member of a team on challenging, concurrent projects, which require close cooperation, adaptability, initiative, and willingness to provide support wherever needed. Some examples of job responsibilities are below:

  • Working in a team of personnel evaluating non-destructive testing (NDT) results from a variety of components, including reporting on data and communicating with customers.
  • Performing interpretation of results from various NDT modalities including, but not limited to: Radiographic Inspection, Computed Tomography, Ultrasonic Inspection, Eddy Current Inspection, and Penetrant Inspection.
  • Working successfully in a fast-paced, manufacturing-focused work environment.
  • Aiding in the oversight of NDT at TA-55-PF-4, a Hazard Category 2 facility.
  • Receiving certification(s) to at least Level II, and up to Level III, within a NDT discipline including, but not limited to: Radiographic Inspection, Computed Tomography, Ultrasonic Inspection, Eddy Current Inspection, and Penetrant Inspection.
  • Participating in the streamlining of, optimization of, and improvement of processes and operations, including decreasing impacts to people, facilities, security, and the environment.
  • Evaluating, installing, qualifying, establishing techniques for, and documenting the process of new inspection equipment installation.
  • Writing technical operating procedures in a clear and coherent manner.
  • Participating in Department of Energy complex-wide interactions, special assignments, and/or external special interest groups.
  • Actively contributing to the modernization of capabilities, knowledge, and infrastructure.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Experience

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: aerospace, electrical, mechanical, nuclear, or other R&D engineering fields. Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems and applying analysis and testing to identify suitable solutions and effectively documenting and communicating results. Demonstrated experience in prioritizing work tasks.

Software & Testing

Demonstrated experience with MS Office products for technical reasons (engineering analysis and/or technical reports / presentations). Experience with engineering design / analysis software and/or programming language(s) to support creative solutions to engineering problems.

Safety & Security

Demonstrated experience with operations in laboratory environments. Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, and compliance.

Communication

Demonstrated ability to work in an environment of teamwork, quality, technical excellence, innovation, and creativity.

Demonstrated technical writing, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated experience working with nominal supervision, as well as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.

Demonstrated success in providing customer service and establishing strong customer relations.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Technical

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following technical areas:
  • NDT modalities including, but not limited to: Radiographic Inspection, Computed Tomography, Ultrasonic Inspection, Eddy Current Inspection, and/or Penetrant Inspection.
  • LANL weapons systems, subsystems, and components.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering design drawings, and effectively applying fundamental problem-solving skills.
  • Conducting process hazard analyses, developing integrated work documents and detailed operating procedures, and safety basis operations.
  • Executing equipment maintenance programs (i.e. writing maintenance documents, executing purchase requests that support maintenance, organizing and maintaining records).
Safety & Security

Demonstrated experience working with classified and/or secure computing resources, including data collection and processing. Demonstrated experience working in moderate-to-high hazard work areas (e.g. nuclear facilities, radiation areas, or confined spaces; fissile material handling). Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g. ASME BPVC, AWS D1.1, etc.).

System & Software

Demonstrated experience using digital image visualization software (e.g. ImageJ, VGSTUDIO MAX). Demonstrated experience using engineering design / modeling software (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks).

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Color discrimination, Peripheral vision, Depth perception, Reaching Down, gripping with the hands, lifting 20-30 pounds and carrying 20-30 pounds, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, lifting and comfortable around high explosive.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
