What You Will Do


This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


P-2 is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics, neutrinos, dark matter, weapons physics, plasma physics and fluid dynamics. Additionally, P-2 staff is responsible for supporting operations at two experimental facilities at LANSCE (Los Alamos Neutron Science Center): Lujan Center and WNR (Weapons Neutron Research). These facilities provide pulsed neutron beams for a wide range of applications. Between the two spallation neutron sources P-2 operates 13 neutron flight paths (experimental end stations).

As an R&D Engineer you will work as part of the Lujan and WNR operations support team responsible for the flight path neutron shutter systems (mechanical, mercury), serve as the point of contact for 3D scanning and metrology, and have opportunities to work on R&D experiments including containment design and implementation. The engineer will report to the ops support team leader. Interpersonal communication skills are a paramount element of the teamwork environment as is the commitment to the safety and security culture of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Minimum Job Requirements R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with and readiness to take ownership of the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy component conveyance: Drive motors, bearings, gears, installation fixturing and the redesign of upgrades as needed.
  • Experience with liquid fill and drain systems driven by pressure and gravity.
  • Experience in CAD and CAM software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Experience with 3D metrology: survey planning, registration, alignment, reporting.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers and technicians.
  • Be capable and willing to work in radiological areas.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Analytical and implementation experience with liquid fill and drain systems driven by pressure and gravity, and the knowledge and experience to design such systems.
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis, data/reduction/automation.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated leadership of high-impact Research and Development projects.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Accelerator facility experience: vacuum hardware, motion/actuation, interlocks, pressure systems. Proven track record of contributing to high-impact R&D projects through design, analysis, planning, prototyping, fabrication, execution and documentation.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux, Python, Bash, C/C++, Git.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
