What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or Engineering Technologist 3 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned at the higher level.

The Reliability Engineering Technologist 2/3 reports to the MSS-APT Group Leader but will be deployed to TA55. This position is responsible for contributing and guiding the reliability program for the maintenance of equipment, machinery, and buildings withing the TA55 portfolio. This position will help develop maintenance procedures and reliability processes relevant to facility maintenance activities. Additional responsibilities will be to contribute and help build the Predictive Maintenance Program for TA55 at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Reliability Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $ 158,000)

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Analyzes failure modes and their impacts on operations.
  • Collaborates with engineering teams to develop reliability improvement plans.
  • Supports root cause analysis investigations and corrective actions.
  • Assists in the development and refinement of preventive maintenance strategies using system performance data, technician feedback, and failure history to improve asset reliability.
  • Structures and maintains asset hierarchy and master data within the CMMS.
  • Creates, revises, and validates technical drawings and documentation using CAD tools; actively participates in design reviews and maintenance readiness assessments.
  • Supports equipment configuration, upgrades, and reviews of vendor technical proposals.
  • Evaluates PM effectiveness and scheduling in collaboration with planners, recommending improvements based on work history and equipment criticality.
  • Leads small tasks or work streams within engineering projects and serves as a technical resource/mentor to junior technologists and maintenance personnel and lower level staff.
  • Uses CMMS and analytical software to monitor equipment performance, generate technical documentation, and communicate findings to engineering and operations teams.
Reliability Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position is expected to:
  • Provide technical leadership for reliability and maintenance programs across facilities or systems.
  • Drive long-range planning efforts related to equipment reliability and maintenance strategies.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and common processes for maintenance and reliability activities.
  • Lead and influence predictive maintenance and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements based on performance metrics and risk.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for reliability methodologies and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Mentor technologists and maintenance personnel and guide technical decision-making.
  • Interface with management, engineering, and operations leadership on reliability priorities and risks.
  • Support institutional maintenance issues and subcontracted or in-house maintenance services.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Knowledge & Expertise: Sound knowledge of mathematical and engineering principles used in evaluating equipment and system performance. Understanding of industry standards, laboratory protocols, and/or relevant DOE/NNSA compliance requirements.

Maintenance Operations: Preventive Maintenance working knowledge of PM development principles, maintenance task analysis, and failure mode mitigation. Basic understanding of asset hierarchy standards (e.g., ISO 14224 or similar) and experience managing asset master data in a CMMS. Knowledge of maintenance work planning and control processes.

Technology:
Proficiency in technical documentation, reporting, and use of software tools for engineering and maintenance analysis.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Knowledge & Expertise: Working knowledge of reliability engineering methodologies and asset management principles. Experience influencing technical decisions and gaining acceptance across organizations.

Maintenance Operations: In-depth knowledge of facilities or equipment maintenance programs. Knowledge of maintenance planning, work control, and configuration management. Experience contributing to or leading predictive maintenance programs.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3 level: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Q Clearance.
  • Ability to gain HRP Certification.
  • Experience in Nuclear facility Operations, Engineering and/or Maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability with conflict resolution.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Experience with techniques such vibration analysis, thermography, ultra-sonic, shock pulse, motor circuit analysis, laser-shaft alignment and/or oil analysis is preferable.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This Work schedule may require off-shift duty to support the TA-55 24/7 operations schedule.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
