What You Will Do

The Weapons Engineering Verification and Validation Division Office (V-DO) is seeking a Science/Engineering Program Manager 1/2 (PM) to join our Program Management team here at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

In this role, you will be at the forefront of advancing our nation's defense capabilities, leveraging your expertise to ensure the electiveness of our nation's premier strategic deterrent. The V Division Program Management team provides leadership and oversight of business and programmatic operations to ensure each group within our portfolio has the resources and support needed to meet our institutional goals. The successful candidate will support their assigned groups through all stages of each project and serve as an important liaison between their team and group leads and important internal Laboratory stakeholders such as the ALDW Program Office (Integrated Schedule, Investments), weapons systems groups, the ALDX Engineering Technology Maturation office, ALDWP production missions, and Global Security customers. The PM may be expected to collaborate (including occasional travel) with sites across the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

Key responsibilities:

  • Program Leadership: Support technical and project leads for all projects in an assigned portfolio to execute complex technical and operational scope on small to mid-sized projects, ensuring alignment with group priorities, customer requirements, and division strategies.
  • Tactical Planning: Develop and implement tactical plans and schedules to ensure stable funding for all assigned team members and/or projects/programs, and facilitate on-time, on-budget project/program execution.
  • Risk Mitigation: Assist in risk identification for assigned portfolio. Manage risks throughout assigned portfolio by participating in development of risk mitigation strategies in conjunction with project, group, and division leadership.
  • Stakeholder communication: Serve as a liaison with internal Laboratory stakeholders such as the ALDW Program Office (Integrated Schedule, Investments), weapons systems groups, the ALDX Engineering Technology Maturation office, ALDWP production missions, and Global Security customers. Provide regular project updates through group and program office reporting mechanisms.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Science & Engineering Program Manager 1 ($96,600-$158,000)

  • Entry-level knowledge of program management of scientific or engineering scope, including defining program work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines; reporting cost and schedule variance; and managing change control and risk.
  • Familiarity with basic program management tools (i.e. P6, Microsoft Projects, and Microstrategy)
  • Entry-level knowledge of the science or engineering discipline of the assigned portfolio(s).
  • Ability to develop and nurture internal relationships and interact effectively with all levels of internal personnel
  • Ability to think critically to support negotiations, resolve conflict, and mitigate project risk in partnership with project, team and group leadership.
  • Communication: Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills & experience.


Additional Job Requirements

Science & Engineering Program Manager 2 ($117,200-$195,400)

  • Working knowledge of and experience in program management of scientific or engineering scope, including defining program work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope and schedule baselines; reporting cost and schedule variance; and managing change control and mitigating risk.
  • Working knowledge of the science or engineering discipline of the assigned portfolio(s).
  • Ability to serve as the primary interface with one or more mid-level or external customers to establish project/program scope, budget, deliverables, and communications plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution and risk mitigation in a project setting.


Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a science, engineering or related field, from an accredited institution and 2 years of of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a science, engineering or related field, from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE "Q" or other Top-Secret clearance
  • Formal project management training or education with the ability to obtain a Project Management Professional certification within 2 years
  • Knowledge of industry standard financial policies and principles including forecasting and scheduling programs such as P6, Microsoft Projects, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience working with Weapons Engineering, Weapons Production, and Weapons Physics organizations.
  • Knowledge of nuclear weapons, NNSA facilities, and DoD customers that support the U.S. stockpile.
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures, and directives.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is preferred.
  • Directly related technical and program management experience


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is one year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
