This position will be filled at either the Machinist 4/5, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Machinist 4 $78,700 - $125,100
The successful candidate will program, set up, and operate manual and CNC mills and lathes in the safe manufacturing of high explosive (HE) components and assemblies of varying complexity. This will include fixture and tool selection, conversation programming on the machine, CAM programming and other typical functions associated to the machining trade.
Machinist 5 $85,900 - $$139,900
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will lead the machining of the most complex HE components. This will include advanced programming methods, fixture design, tooling selection and purchase, and all other technical aspects of machining HE components.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated experience working from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, and a variety of general machine shop equipment. Comprehensive understanding and demonstrated experience in the interpretation of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, theories, and concepts as they apply to machining activities. Demonstrated experience in shop mathematics and English-Metric unit conversions including applied trigonometry.
Communication: Excellent communications skills with a strong organizational approach to performing work. Attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to proactively seek solutions to a variety of challenges that require close interaction and strong communication with engineers, machinists and inspectors, and other stakeholders.
Leadership: Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the position and organization.
Additional Job Requirements for Machinist 5:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Technical Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of CAM programming principles on complex geometries. Advanced knowledge regarding tooling and fixturing design and fabrication to support machining operations. Advanced knowledge of machining techniques and processes.
Communication: Advanced proficiency and efficiency with oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse team of professional technicians supporting multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
Leadership: Advanced proficiency and efficiency with oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse team of professional technicians supporting multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
Education/Experience at Machinist 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 6 years of experience; OR, 8 years prototype experience; OR, Journeyperson qualification program and 6 years of experience.
Education/Experience at Machinist 5: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 10 years of experience; OR, 12 years prototype experience; OR, Journeyperson qualification program and 10 years of experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Mastercam software
- Experience in the operation of CAD software, Creo or Solidworks preferred
- LANL HE Handler or experienced in the handling of hazardous materials
- Multi-axis machining experience

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
