The Inorganic Isotope & Actinide Chemistry Group (C-IIAC) is seeking an undergraduate student who is reliable, self-motivated, and energetic, with an interest in chemistry/chemical sciences. The successful candidate will work closely with staff to obtain knowledge of chemical processes, build a background in chemical sciences, and gain experience working with a diverse set of students and staff. The successful candidate must be able to work professionally and independently with minimal supervision, be well-organized, establish and balance priorities, and demonstrate initiative, versatility, and accuracy in performing their work.
The internship will provide an opportunity to develop marketable skills in the areas of Chemistry/Chemical Sciences. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.
Examples of LANL projects in Chemistry/Chemical Science include, but are not limited to:
- Inorganic, organic, and actinide synthetic chemistry, catalysis, polymers, and nanomaterials
- Analytical chemistry, measurement science, separations, spectroscopy, remote sensing, fieldable instrumentation, bio-analytical chemistry, science of signatures.
- Radiochemistry, actinide science, nuclear forensic, isotope production and separation.
- Materials chemistry and characterization, additive manufacturing, aging, corrosion and materials compatibility.
- Data analysis, chemometric, advanced data visualization, modeling, and data mining.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Provide documentation of acceptance into an undergraduate program.
- Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an undergraduate degree program.
- Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience with common laboratory apparatus and instrumentation.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and
- Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Chemistry Division serves the Laboratory's core national security mission areas of weapons science and threat reduction with innovative chemical science and technology. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
