Vessel Operations Team Lead (Science/Engineering Project Leader 4)

What You Will Do

As Lead of the Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations Group (J-2) Vessel Operations Team, the selected candidate will work with multi-disciplinary teams comprising mechanical, chemical, and civil engineers, scientists, technicians, designers, and customers with diverse backgrounds in physics and high explosive operations. The Vessel Operations Team Lead will provide oversite and leadership to the group's operational and execution team, as well as management of the group's associated process facilities. This position will require the candidate to become a high explosives manager to support the group's firing site leaders, will be responsible for coordination and throughput of facilities that support assembly, decontamination, inspection and repair operations for vessels. This position will also assist group management with vessel operations and experiment execution schedules and budget management. Leadership

Demonstrated management and leadership of technical projects and of personnel with broad technical disciplines. Demonstrated experience in teaming, collaborations and integration across program lines to accomplish larger program and Group/Division goals. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated abilities to resolve conflict and to build consensus. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, evaluating, hiring, and mentoring staff.

Technical Background

Thorough knowledge of management of all aspects of large complex scientific or engineering project(s) and track record of successful completion of the project within the approved scope, schedule, and budget baseline. Thorough knowledge of and proven ability in conducting research and/or development activities, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives. Demonstrate independent judgment to negotiate with program and line managers to ensure that resources are available to accomplish the work, to identify procurement and contracting needs, and to marshal resources to complete project deliverables within the scope, schedules, and budgets defined in project work packages.

Experience in Complex Operations

Demonstrated experience implementing Conduct of Operations, understanding and developing Integrated Safety Management (ISM) processes of hazardous operations. Experience leading complex operations with multiple operational hazards. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing technical operational procedures, providing of on-the job training, applying standard safety practices, and understanding regulations as they apply to operations dealing with radioactive and hazardous materials, waste processing and proper disposition.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 12 years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

  • Experience in Regulatory Compliance of Waste Streams
  • Experience in Industrial Hygiene Practices and understanding of regulations
  • Experience and understanding of Operational Readiness and Execution
  • Experience standing up new facilities

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
