AI/ML Power Systems Modeling Graduate Student Intern (GRA)

What You Will Do

The Information Sciences and Modeling Group (A-1) develops information systems and models to understand complicated threat scenarios, like weapons of mass destruction, hurricanes, and infectious disease outbreaks. We are seeking a creative and resourceful Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) with a degree in a STEM field to join our Critical Infrastructure team for a year-round paid internship. You will work on leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods to study security assessment, reliability, and resilience on electrical power systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in electrical engineering or other relevant discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Desire to Learn: The desire to continually learn new things, as well as being open to working on a variety of topics.
  • Programming proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or Julia.
  • Proficiency in common ML libraries such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in power system modeling and simulation.
  • Familiarity with tools such as PowerWorld, MATPOWER, PSSE, PowerModels, Simscape, PSIM, or PSCAD.
  • Experience with generative adversarial networks (GAN) and Bayesian inference.
  • Relevant power engineering experience at electric utilities or through a senior design project is preferred.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
