The Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an opening for a postmasters student in artificial intelligence. We seek a creative and
resourceful candidate with strong background and interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will work on a team to finetune and leverage large language models such as ChatGPT and Llama for science. The term of the appointment is two years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Strong background in machine learning
• Strong programming skills in Python
• Experience training machine learning models with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
• Good communication skills
Education/Experience: A Master's degree in a STEM field.
Desired Qualifications:
• Experience with large language models
• Experience with retrieval augmented generation
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
