What You Will Do

The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center Facility Operations Directorate (LANSCE-FO) is seeking an Operator to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will report to the Balance of Plant Operations Manager, primarily providing facility support and performing other facility operations related functions. The Balance of Plant Group is responsible for facility management at LANSCE. The selected candidate will be responsible for a multitude of tasks pertaining to maintenance and facility operations. The Operator will operate and monitor facility systems, manage building configurations, perform routine tasks in support of operations, maintenance, science, and engineering activities. Provide direct support in operations, specification, construction, and/or design of facility mechanical, electrical, and/or chemical systems. Perform routine evaluations of equipment and keeps detailed logs for critical equipment. Observe equipment and control panels for operator messages or error indicators and respond accordingly. Perform diagnostic tests and react appropriately to the messages and report errors or machine malfunctions as required.

The successful candidate must provide facility support to all personnel, tenants, and visitors while ensuring a safe and secure working environment. Additionally, the selected candidate will become familiar with LANSCE-FO facilities, overall facility operations within the FOD, and provide operational assistance and support to the division.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Ability to understand and identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and experience with lock-out/tag-out of hazardous energy.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and word processors.
  • Ability to learn and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Basic skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions for facility equipment.
  • Basic skill in the preparation and presentation of facility status.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to respond to facility emergencies and abnormal events, along with after hour call outs as directed.
  • Ability to interface between the facility operations organization and the programmatic tenants and provide general direction, guidance, and operational support to a facility to ensure the implementation of operational and programmatic functions.
Training/Certifications: The ability to obtain LO/TO coordinator trainings, IFMA or BOMI certificate.
Education/Experience: Position typically requires a high school diploma and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Lockout/Tagout Trained.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in a wide variety of facility maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems.
  • Working knowledge of a building automation systems.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to hear high-pitched sounds, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz), climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, lifting 30 pounds, and carrying 20 to 30 pounds. Standard physical requirements associated with field observation and oversight.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
