This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional Designer/Drafter 3 or 4 to join our team within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division, TA55 Designer/Drafter group. The PFE Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within the Laboratory, virtually all plutonium operations occur at TA-55. This site is the nation's most modern plutonium science and manufacturing facility, and it is the only fully operational, full-capability plutonium facility in the nation.
The selected incumbent(s) will be working as part of a design team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at LANL. The successful candidate will be expected to lead, train and mentor junior designers. Regular functions include but are not limited to; Creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs, visits to facilities to evaluate, identify, and document existing deficiencies; producing calculations and design recommendations; develop initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval.
Designer/Drafter 3 ($63,200-$99,000)
As a Designer/Drafter, you will be working as part of a design team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at LANL. Regular functions include but are not limited to creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs, visits to facilities to evaluate, identify, and document existing deficiencies; produce complex calculations and unique technical design recommendations; develops complete design packages and design solutions by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval; functions part of and contributes to a strong team-work environment; mentor junior-level drafters, and may lead and subject matter expert on process or product improvement related activities. Designer/Drafter 4 ($69,500-$110,300)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Designer/Drafter 4 performs the following duties:
- Expert experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. Generates complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems. Independently defines modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolves design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing.
- Advanced knowledge in understanding engineering design and industry standards
- Lead other Designers and Drafters
- Advise, train, and mentor junior designers
- Develops novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications. Understand and applies design limits in non- routine environments.
- Provide organizational improvements and leadership
- Possess advanced skill in the utilization of drafter tools
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years' experience in computer-aided drafting (CAD) software tools to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or utility systems
- At least 3 years working experience with field-verification and documentation of existing conditions for respective discipline(s).
- Minimum 3 years' experience modeling and drawing drafting principals for application of symbols and notes, to drawings and models to capture design intent
- Demonstrate ability to layout systems in schematic and plan view.
- At least 3 years working experience verifying work from other Designer/Drafters in accordance with drafting standards.
- Ability to mentor junior Designer/Drafters.
- Demonstrate ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen.
- Demonstrate ability to work in collaboration with a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure drawing coordination and quality.
Additional Job Requirements for Designer/Drafter 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Minimum 5 years' experience in computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
- Minimum 5 years' experience modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.
- At least 5 years working experience with engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to one or more of the following disciplines: civil, architectural, mechanical, electro/mechanical, structural or electrical.
- At least 5 years working experience with ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.
- At least 5 years working experience with principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
- At least 5 years working experience with component and tool design, fixturing, and facility equipment.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures
- AutoCAD Certification
- Experience with preparing and presenting AutoCAD training to classes of 20-30 Drafter/Designers
- Utilize working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model generation
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with GD&T.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
