Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as an Electrical Engineer. ES Division applies capabilities to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within ES, the Science and Technology Operations (STO) Engineering Group is a multi-disciplinary organization consisting of collaborative System and Modification Engineering Teams. Collectively, these teams enable the STO Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) mission across nearly three million square feet of mixed-use office, laboratory, research, and production space. With over one hundred and fifty facilities in 12 Technical Areas, STO mission work spans the majority of Laboratory Directorates. This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Electrical Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

The successful Engineer 2 candidate will perform the following (list is not all-inclusive):
  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (APs), LANL Master Specifications, and related Codes and Standards
  • Lead the development and review of electrical engineering and designs for new and replacement equipment installations including design details, equipment data sheets, equipment selection, calculations, installation instructions / specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, etc. to satisfy the applicable design requirements
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost
Electrical Engineer 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)

Additional duties at the Engineer 3 level include (list is not all-inclusive):
  • Assist in defining maintenance requirements including corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance
  • Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management
  • Support associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Combined experience related to the engineering, calculations, and design of facility electrical system, structures and components such as switchgear, switchboards, MCCs, motor starters / VFDs, Small UPS, panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, and short circuit analysis
  • Experience in system and equipment installation and maintenance in accordance with National Codes and Standards such as IBC, IEBC, NFPA, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering principles, design guides and relevant standards
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning, design change control and coordination. Knowledge of basic project engineering practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
Additional Job Requirements for Engineer 3:
  • Progressive combined experience related to the design, installation, and maintenance of facility electrical system, structures and components
  • Knowledge and understanding of Conduct of Engineering implementation
  • In-depth knowledge of integrated systems engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Develop and implement interdisciplinary design solutions to complex facility and equipment installations
    • Apply project engineering practices
    • Execute self-directed work, planning, and prioritization
    • Work with multi-disciplinary teams
    • Mentor junior personnel
Education/Experience at Engineer 2
Engineer 2 requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum three (3) years of practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at Engineer 3
Engineer 3 requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum six (6) years practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) is desirable at the Engineer 2 level
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable at the Engineer 3 level
  • Advanced engineering or technical degree is desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation
  • Experience with SKM Powertools Software or similar electrical system analysis software

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance:
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
