Environmental Health Physicist 2/3

What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Health Physicist 2 or Health Physicist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory's Environmental Health Physics team, which is responsible for calculating radiation dose based on operational/sample data; calculating off-site doses and public exposures using computer models; reviewing new and modified projects for public release of material containing residual radionuclides; and design of Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) and Multi-Agency Radiation Survey Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) compliant sampling plans and release reports. The Environmental Health Physics team also provides technical support, dispersion modeling, and recommendations for protective actions to the Laboratory's Emergency Operations Center during incidents. You will support compliance with Department of Energy Order 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment, which is one of the many state and federal environmental requirements managed by the Environmental Stewardship Group of the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division.

Health Physicist 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

The responsibilities of the Health Physicist 2 include calculating radiation dose based on operational/sample data; calculating off-site doses and public exposures using computer models; reviewing new and modified projects for public release of material containing residual radionuclides; and design of Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) and Multi-Agency Radiation Survey Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) compliant sampling plans and release reports. The Health Physicist 2 will support the Environmental Health Physics team in providing technical support, dispersion modeling, and recommendations for protective actions to the Laboratory's Emergency Operations Center during incidents. You will also contribute to the Annual Site Environmental Report (ASER). You will develop procedures to document work processes and perform quality assurance activities on routine team activities, ensuring all work processes and deliverables meet quality specifications and regulatory requirements. You may act as the lead point-of-contact or technical advisor on small to medium projects.

Health Physicist 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined at the Health Physicist 2 level, the Health Physicist 3 will also be required to support advanced analysis of radionuclide mixtures and advanced interpretation of spectroscopy data; take a lead role in operations at the Emergency Technical Support Center during drills and emergency events; and support research endeavors regarding radionuclide measurements in the soil and non-human biota and evaluation of dose assessment models and selected parameters. You will evaluate existing and new regulatory requirements for environmental radiation protection and determine actions necessary for Laboratory implementation of these requirements. You may also participate in the review and development of national standards for radionuclide measurements and participate in Laboratory outreach programs with members of the public and community organizations.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Working knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Working knowledge of health physics, statistical evaluation techniques, and environmental transport processes.
  • Ability to build collaborative projects and relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Communication skills, both oral and writing, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, reports, seminars, briefings, and/or presentations.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to high quality deliverables and a customer service approach to regulatory compliance issues.


Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist 3:
  • Experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet Department of Energy Order 458.1 requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Advanced knowledge of health physics, statistical evaluation techniques, and environmental transport processes.

Training/Certifications:

Certified Health Physicist or eligible to become certified

Education/Experience for Health Physicist 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science, and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Health Physicist 3 level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science, and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Certified Health Physicist or eligible to become certified.
  • Experience with Emergency Operations technical support.
  • Experience with computer dispersion and dose modeling.
  • Experience with Multi-Agency Radiation Site Survey and Investigation Manual (MARSSIM)
  • Experience with Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME)

Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
