What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Environmental Tec 3 or Environmental Tec 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined in Minimum Job Requirements below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. Waste Management (WM) Waste Generator Services group (WGS) is looking for highly motivated technicians to help facilitate waste disposal at our multi-disciplinary footprint. The selected candidate will support LANL waste management coordinators by packaging and shipping waste throughout LANL facility.

Primary duties of the Environmental Tec 3/4 level may include but are not limited to:
  • Packaging, weighing, closing, and torquing waste containers.
  • Assisting with sampling efforts of different waste types.
  • Participation in internal, programmatic, and regulatory audits and assessments.
  • Creation of technical reports i.e. waste data summaries.
  • Implementation of internal applications to record waste from cradle to grave.
  • Operation of mechanical lifting equipment including forklifts.
  • Management of RCRA waste storage areas which involves knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements, contribute to Integrated Work Documents, Detailed Operating Procedures, or other work planning documents.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Environmental Tec 3 ($57,800 - $89,500)

Regulation:


Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of Low-Level Waste and hazardous material. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Communication:

Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing, and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports.

Skills/Expertise:

Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs.

Teamwork:

Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.

Customer Service:

Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.

Clearance and Mandatory Certifications:

The ability to obtain a Q-clearance and Human Reliability Program (HRP).

Training/Certifications: Ability to obtain Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA, Forklift, CDL, Air Purifying Respiratory Protection certification. Site specific training at TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR and WCRRF. Full qualification involves obtaining unescorted PF-4 access.

Education/Experience for Environmental Tec 3: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 2-4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires 1 year of job related experience.


Environmental Tec 4 ($69,500 - $110,300)


Leadership: Mentors technicians, provides technical coordination, and functional and operational direction as needed.

Regulations/Compliance: Advanced knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes; advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures; and the advanced ability to understand inspection and/or characterization data on waste containers.

Policy/Procedures: Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's waste handling policies, practices, and procedures; demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements; advanced knowledge and experience with lock out tag out policies and procedures; and the ability to aide in the preparation of waste handling reports.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results.

Independent Judgement: Demonstrated experience performing work and prioritizing tasks with nominal supervision, as well as contributing to a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air-purifying respirators.

Education/Experience for Environmental Tec 4: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 4-6 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate's degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires 1 year of job related experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Regulation:

Knowledge of one or more of the following: NNSS Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), LANL WAC, and the LANL New Mexico Environmental Department permit. Experience with nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization, and waste management.

Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing.

Skills/Expertise:

Working knowledge of Low-Level Waste or other regulated waste packaging requirements. Successful experience with accounting/management systems such as WCATS. Demonstrated experience with nuclear facility personal protective equipment (PPE) such as anti-contamination clothing, booties, a variety of safety gloves, and full-face respirator qualification.

Training/Certifications: Roadworker, HAZWOPER, CDL, RCRA certification and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift operator. Site specific training at TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB/ CMR and WCRRF. Full qualification involves obtaining unescorted PF-4 access and Person-in-Charge qualification.


Desired skills for Environmental Tec 4:


Experience: At this level a minimum of 2 years previous experience gained through training in a specific field of hazardous material or waste management would be expected.

Skills/Expertise: Experience and participation in audits of material and/or management activities to include undergoing assessments for bringing up/re-start of new or existing capabilities at Nuclear Hazardous Category II/III facilities. The ability to obtain and maintain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator.

Regulations: Knowledge of DOE O 315 Conduct of Operations. Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, § 712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
