As 21st century geopolitical realities reshape our national security policy, it remains one of our nation's priorities to deter nuclear attacks and prevent large-scale conventional warfare. Trusted by our nation, emulated by our peers, and respected by the world, Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a passionate and driven Research and Development Engineer (R&D 4) to join our Future System Concepts System Engineering team. The position resides within the Advanced Systems Development Group (Q-18) that champions and makes direct contributions to the safety, security, and effectiveness of our Nation's nuclear stockpile to reduce emerging national security and global threats.
In this role, you will be at the forefront of design and development of future weapon systems in support of our nation's foremost defense missions. You will work with an elite team of engineers, scientists, national defense partners, and other subject matter expert's resident at LANL and from across the nuclear weapons enterprise to develop weapon concepts. These projects range in scope and fidelity from concept trade studies to advanced, multi-partner ground and flight test demonstrator efforts.
Q-18's Future System Concepts System Engineering team is responsible for defining the technical path forward for our nation's deterrent, and the current and future composition of the stockpile. We evaluate and address technology and/or capability gaps and lead teams to properly treat problems associated with highly complex defense systems. The position is critical to the national security of the United States and its allies and requires broad expertise across a number of sometimes disparate fields that are applicable to current and future weapon systems. The Future Systems Concepts System Engineering team is just one of the many teams in Q-18 applying a broad range of technical skills in response to emerging threats. In Q-18, we responsively address emerging national security challenges through simultaneous technical and programmatic excellence and innovation in the development of future weapons systems with our laboratory and national defense partners. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Leadership: Translates national needs into technological objectives and goals for engineering research and development (R&D). Coordinates, monitors, and contributes to the work of technical staff to achieve tactical and strategic goals. Provides technical direction to diverse teams for Laboratory-wide initiatives. Proven ability to achieve milestones and deliverables in a dynamic environment while remaining within budget and schedule constraints.
Communication: Ability to lead effective, intellectually diverse teams and to interact with Laboratory- and complex-wide networks. Represents the Laboratory to external agencies. Interacts routinely with Laboratory middle- and senior-level management. Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical material verbally and in writing.
Job Knowledge and Experience: Advanced knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines, designing, planning, and executing research and development projects. Demonstrated experience applying engineering fundamentals in the design phases of project development
Education and Experience Required: This position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active Q Clearance or equivalent DoD clearance.
- Experience within the DoD or Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) weapons production or design programs.
- Knowledgeable on reading engineering drawings and specifications.
- Broad expertise in engineering and analysis fundamentals to include CAD modeling, drafting, GD&T, tolerance analysis, mechanics of materials, structural dynamics, and fluids, including aerothermodynamics, & heat & mass transfer.
- Knowledge of nuclear weapon system engineering applications, use cases, CONOPs, and life cycles.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), ECAD, and systems engineering tools.
- Courses of study or experience in high explosives, shock phenomenon, hydrodynamics, and/or nuclear physics.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
