Maintenance Technician

What You Will Do

Use your maintenance skills to support our national security mission! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a Maintenance Technician (Engineered Systems Technician Level 2 or 3) to support the Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division. As a member of the PF-PROD Equipment Maintenance team, this position will provide machine system life cycle support to machine tools located in nine machine shops within the PF Division used for precision fabrication. Mission areas include preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for PF machine shops as well as occasionally deploying these services to other Laboratory organizations and programs as needed to achieve institutional success. The technician will also perform new machine installations, upgrades and retrofits, as well as maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry.

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Systems Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Engineered Systems Tec 2: $52,400 - $80,600

Engineered Systems Tec 3: $57,800 - $89,500

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Maintenance Knowledge
  • Basic experience and knowledge with preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of machine tools.

Systems Support
  • Knowledge and experience with installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment or systems. This will require you to execute basic maintenance and/or new equipment installation activities with verbal and/or written instructions. With supervision, you will support the monitoring of equipment efficiencies, including the determination of functional problems using diagnostic equipment and measuring devices commonly used in troubleshooting. You will support documentation for installations and/or repairs using our databases.

Schematics
  • Basic knowledge and experience reading and interpreting machine tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to enable understanding of machine tool subsystem functions and how they integrate into overall performance.

Customer Support & Team Dynamics
  • Experience interfacing with a variety of personnel to support and complete work requests. You must have the ability to work independently as well as demonstrated experience working in a team environment with the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple, ongoing team tasks amidst programmatic priorities. You need time management and organization skills!

Clearance
  • You must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which may require US citizenship. The employer will support the selected candidate through this application process.

Training/Certifications:
  • You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as Radiological Worker II; Beryllium Worker; forklift operator; crane operator (incidental or qualified); and others that may apply. The employer will support the selected candidate through these training and certification programs.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level (Level 3) also requires the following:
  • Working knowledge and experience with preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of machine tools. You will assist senior technicians to perform moderately complex installations, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and subsystems.
  • Working experience supporting the maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems. You will apply your knowledge and skills in the operation of diagnostic equipment and measuring devices to assist senior technicians in developing and executing solutions to more complex technical issues and independently develop solutions to routine technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. You will maintain documentation for installations and/or repairs using established databases.

Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at Level 3: This job requires an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation (i.e., 5 years).

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
