Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3)

What You Will Do


The Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (E-1) Group is seeking an R&D Manager 3 (Deputy Group Leader) to partner with the Group Leader to provide technical, operational and business oversight of the group. You will report to the Group Leader and be a valuable member of the Engineering Technology and Design management team. You will complement the Group Leader and ensure effective program development, program execution, operational compliance, adherence to safety and security policies and processes, fiscal stewardship, strategic initiatives and employee development. This position will require half-time funding on programmatic codes, and you will be expected to conduct technical or research activities which are in alignment with capabilities of the group.

E-1 performs mechanical engineering design, analysis, fabrication, assembly and testing support. In E-1, you are assured to be challenged by a uniquely diverse set of customers in Weapons and Science, Technology and Engineering Directorates. The group is comprised of research and development engineers, technologists, technicians, and designers with a passion for solving technical problems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Leadership

Demonstrated success in leadership and/or management of a program, line organization or engineering project. Experience in recruiting, evaluating, and/or mentoring staff.


Technical

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in an engineering field. Knowledge in one or more of the group's areas of expertise (mechanical design, analysis and experimentation in support of research and development) is preferred.


Strategy & Collaboration

Demonstrated experience in building collaborative relationships, internally across groups, divisions and directorates, and externally with other laboratories, universities, and industrial partners.


Communication

Strong record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, letters of reference, and by seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with DOE and LANL policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity and application of the Safe Conduct of Research (ScoR) principles of a safe workplace.
  • Experience managing or operating within moderate hazard facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with classified computing, classified data, and/or classified parts.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to identify project needs, define resources, and bring technical efforts to a successful and timely completion.
  • Ability to obtain a Q Clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.




Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
