The Dynamic and Quasi-Static Loading Experimental Team of Materials Physics and Application Division (MPA) specializes in deformation and damage quantification, across dynamic and quasi-static strain rates and a wide range of temperatures, with emphasis on its linkage to processing and mechanical properties. This is done to provide experimental support to advance the physics of damage models for weapons applications. The team operates with both an eye on relevance to the weapons program as well as fundamental science to stimulate intellectual growth, remain state of the art, and attract sustainable talent.
As a post-bachelor's research assistant, you will be an integral member of a team tackling a variety of microstructure characterization and data management challenges. You will work with a mentor and will be responsible for your own independent research. You will be expected to develop techniques to effectively perform your work in a variety of situations and will collaborate with other researchers on focused experiments. Immediate needs are for candidates with optical and/or electron microscopy experience that can assist in the characterization of deformed metals and alloys.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Technical writing skills, such as writing research summaries.
- Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
- Completed coursework or research experience in one of the disciplines outlined above
Education/Experience: B.S. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or related field within the last 3 years and a 3.0 Cumulative GPA.
Desired Qualifications:
- Self-motivated and independent researcher who has demonstrated experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Experience with computer codes such as Python, or Matlab.
- Drafting experience and familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, and tolerance.
- Hands on physical research experience, especially in the area of metallographic sample preparation

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.
