Postdoctoral researcher in Economics

What You Will Do

The Information System and Modeling group (A-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a motivated and innovative postdoctoral researcher with a specialization in economic impact analysis and cost-benefit analysis.

We are looking for a creative and resourceful candidate with a strong background in economics and advanced quantitative and statistical skills. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative team to conduct analysis and develop quantitative models for economic impact analysis, techno-economic analysis for decarbonization efforts, including life cycle assessments. This role will involve close collaboration with a team of researchers, contributing to multidisciplinary projects, and actively publishing research in peer-reviewed journals.

In addition to these responsibilities, the candidate will broadly contribute to economic and decision-making modeling within the global security domain. This appointment is initially for two years, with the potential for a one-year extension based on performance and funding availability.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven experience in economic impact analysis.
  • Proficiency in input-output modeling and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models.


Education/Experience:
  • A PhD in economics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Industry experience is highly valued.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in impact analysis and CGE models, such as IMPLAN, REMI, and GTAP.
  • Proficiency with data science, statistical modeling, and econometrics tools: R, Python, MATLAB, Julia, Stata.
  • Experience with mathematical programming tools such as AMPL, GAMS, JuMP, and solvers like Mosek, Gurobi, and IPOPT.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessment tools such as OpenLCA and GREET.
  • Competence in statistical modeling and machine learning techniques.
  • Experience with Agent-Based Modeling, decision-making frameworks, and game theory.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. Q Clearance: Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
