Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) as a Project Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 3/Engineer 4 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Project Engineer 3 ($112,00-$186,700)
As a Project Engineer, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects in DOE/NNSA non-reactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities. You will be responsible for leading and managing the development of projects with an Integrated Project Team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. The work requires the following job duties:
- Function as a team lead for other project engineers and provides oversight of their work
- Lead engineering efforts related to electrical transmission/distribution and/or mechanical engineering in industrial facilities
- Work as a subcontract administrator for design subcontracts
- Develop cost estimates
- Manage technical requirements for construction
- Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources
- Resolve field-initiated questions on engineering, visits jobsite, aide in the resolution of construction related technical issues
- Mentor other project engineers
In addition to what is outlined for the Project Engineer 3, the Project Engineer 4 performs the following duties:
- Aid in developing training presentations
- Seek out work for new and existing customers within LANL
- Lead initiatives to improve the organization
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- 6 years of experience working with design and construction contracts
- 6 years of experience in cost engineering functions, including cost estimating, cost control, financial reporting systems, and cost and variance analysis
- Project management and execution experience, including detailed engineering, and construction work processes and procedures
- New methods of design and construction, construction practices and the economics involved, as well as the application of industry codes and standards
- Ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen
- Ability to apply critical thinking in complex problem solving, present options, and make recommendations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and Adobe Acrobat
- 12 years of experience as a senior technical advisor implementing, overseeing, and assessing engineering activities
- 12 years of experience with all the following: non-reactor nuclear codes, standards, & best practice, nonreactor nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems, and knowledge in generation of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
- Experience in the development and implementation of a Project Engineering Program
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience working with Performance Based Indicators
- Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to Vital Safety Systems such as DOE 420.1C and DOE STD- 1189
- Demonstrated experience with development of safety class and safety significant designs
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Education/Experience at Engineer 4:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
- Professional registration as a professional engineer or registered architect
- Advanced degree in relevant field
- Experience with developing schedules using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6
- Current or previous certification in Earned Value Management systems (EVMS), including experience with successful implementation and maintenance of EVMS to help manage a project/program
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program at the Engineer 4 level. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
