R&D Engineer 2/3 (Requirements Engineer)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Digital Engineering Strategy (W-DES) group is looking for a Requirements Engineer to guide and support other engineers and professional staff to support five weapon systems: B61, W76, W78, W88, and W93. The job duties include development, documentation and maintenance of the requirements integral to these weapon systems as well as managing any changes to the requirements as necessary. Interfacing with weapon system engineers, production realization team (PRT) leads, design physicists, and external agencies such as DoD and NNSA is an integral part of this position.

R&D Engineer 2

A requirements engineer must be able to operate independently and must exercise personal initiative in successfully completing assigned tasks. Responsibilities will include eliciting requirements from a variety of sources and using requirements management software to ensure requirements are linked to current objective evidence. The position requires technical leadership and teamwork with multi-discipline system engineers, physicists, technicians, and designers. You will be expected to perform work in adherence to quality assurance requirements. Flexibility is a requirement, and you must be able to demonstrate you can work on multiple tasks for multiple customers with changing priorities and successfully meet customer deadlines and requirements.

R&D Engineer 3

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a requirements engineer at this level is expected to have advanced knowledge and experience in the listed job requirements. At this level, a successful candidate will be expected to provide strong technical expertise, to lead various initiatives, and to teach and guide junior staff.

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2

Engineering Experience: Intermediate knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

  • Intermediate knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following engineering areas: shock, vibration, fluids, thermal, nuclear, systems, explosives, manufacturing, process, control systems, data acquisition and data analysis.


  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering design.


Communication: Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Master's may be preferred.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

Engineering Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of systems engineering and requirements management principles and processes. Thorough experience with product design engineering phases to include Concept, Design, Development and Production.

Leadership and Teaming: Significant experience in the following areas: problem solving, conflict resolution, and customer and stakeholder interaction. Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, integrating and coordinating interdisciplinary

work, and working with customers and other stakeholders to address technical design projects.

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Must have a proven record of team building and conflict resolution.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

R&D Engineer 2

• Demonstrated knowledge of IBM Rational Doors or similar automated requirements management tool

• Demonstrated ability to work with standard Microsoft Office product suite applications

• Experience with requirements management and associated requirements management tools

• Active Q clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q clearance

R&D Engineer 3

• Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and NNSA facilities that support the U.S. stockpile

• Experience with Doors DXL scripting language or C++ as well as an understanding of Object Oriented Design techniques

• Demonstrated experience in nuclear weapons development, qualification and certification

• Certified Systems Engineer (CSE) or Program Management Professional (PMP)

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
